AYLESFORD, a town in the Medway parliamentary division of Kent, England, 31 m.
The name of the larger group of monuments close by, called the Countless Stones, is due to the popular belief, which occurs elsewhere, that they are not to be counted.
The supposed tomb of Horsa, who fell in the same battle, is situated at Horsted, about 2 m.

The tombs are all located on the south-facing lower slopes of the North Downs.
One group is concentrated between Maidstone and Rochester on the eastern side of the Medway and another between Snodland and Wrotham to the west of the river.
Unlike the tombs of Wessex there is little evidence for earlier activity such as causewayed enclosures but there are plenty of later prehistoric and even Roman ceremonial sites in the vicinity of the megaliths.

The town is pleasantly situated on the north-east bank of the river Medway, over which is a neat modern stone-bridge of six arches; it consists of one principal street, on the east side of which the ground rises abruptly to an elevation of one hundred feet.
Perhaps, until the Medway bridge was built, the parish lines respected the natural boundary of the Medway.
Against the east gable and under the central piers of the chancel of the parish church at Aylesford is one of the finest rectangular tomb chests in Kent.

The brass rubbing to be seen in the pew is of a brass effigy of Lady Elizabeth Culpeper on the top of the altar tomb at the northeast corner of the chancel.
A raised vault and tomb, four feet high, was erected in the western portion of it, entirely blocking up the entrance on the north side.
A square pew, with seating for ten people, was then erected on the top of the raised tomb at the western chancel, the arch cut away and a plastered beam placed across the top of it.

Every religious house at some time or other needed an impetus to improve its finances and its worth in the eyes of the world and the possession of the shrine of a saint to which pilgrims could come and worship was as good a way as any other.
Canterbury profited richly from the tomb and shrine of Thomas Becket but until 1256, Rochester had nothing similar to offer would-be pilgrims and benefactors.
The new charter of 20 June 1541 set up a cathedral church which was to be run by a dean and six canons regular of the new established religion.

This is a large Church which befits the County Town of Kent and stands next to the old Archbishop's Palace on the banks of the River Medway.
In the book about Kent by Arthur Mee, the dimensions of the Church are given as 116 feet long by 93 feet wide, having a tower of 80 feet at the West end.
His tomb is situated below the wall tablet.
