Meelick is a rural area bordering on counties Offaly and Tipperary, sitting right on the confluence of the Shannon and the Little Brosna rivers.
Meelick parish church is one of the few medieval churches in Ireland still used by the Catholic Church.
Meelick is talking part in the Greenways Festival in summer 2003 to celebrate the 400th anniversary of the legendary 1603 march of O’Sullivan Beara from the Beara Peninsula to the Breifne area.

Meelick soon got into their stride and used the wind advantage to great effect and scored 2 - 5 to Rahoon’s 0 - 1 before the break.
Gearioid O’Connor brought the game to Meelick and one thinks if all members played with the same heart the outcome may have been different.
Meelick did get into the Rahoon half on occasion and capitalised on some needless fouling to score 3 valuable points from frees.

He was President of Meelick GAA club for long number of years and he did alot of work for the club behind the scenes.
The was a huge representative attendance at the Removal of the remains from his home to Meelick Church and at the burial in the church grounds.
Officers and members of Meelick GAA club formed a guard of honour and the coffin was draped in the Meelick club colours.

The most famous religious house founded by the O'Maddens was Meelick Abbey, which is about two miles from Eyrecourt.
By 1479 it was probably in ruins again for the Annals state that Eoghan O'Madden founded a monastery in Meelick for the Franciscan Friars and "selected a burial place for himself in it".
A white horse was kept at Meelick and this horse carried goods and dispatches between the monasteries.

KILLELY, KILLEELY, or MEELICK, partly within the north liberties of the city of LIMERICK, but chiefly in the barony of BUNRATTY, county of CLARE, and province of MUNSTER, 3 miles (N. W.) from Limerick city, on the mail road to Ennis, and on the river Shannon ; containing 5141 inhabitants.
The church, a small plain structure, is picturesquely situated at Meelick ; it was built by the grandmother of the present Marquess of Conyngham, and subsequently made parochial ; it is now undergoing a thorough repair, a grant of £220 having been made by the Ecclesiastical Commissioners for that purpose.
In the Roman Catholic divisions this parish is partly in the district of Meelick, and partly in that of Thomond Gate, or St.

Meelick is on the river Shannon south of Banagher.
The Brosna river as well as the remnants of the old canals merge with the Shannon here as does the 'Cut' which is a famine relief waterway.

 RTE News - Two charged with Limerick drug find
The haul was discovered on a farm in Meelick, County Clare on Tuesday afternoon.
Michael Shannon, a 35-year-old married father of five from Prospect, Limerick and 20-year-old Brian Hanley from Meelick were charged with being in possession of 100,000 ecstasy tablets for the purpose of selling or otherwise supplying.
The drugs were found hidden amongst boxes of tiles in a crate which was being unloaded by both of the accused.

FISHERY DESCRIPTION: Meelick is a known angling location when the salmon are running and has some lovely varied and interesting waters ranging from fast runs to glides and pools to slow deep stretches.
There are islands separating an Artificial cut on the Co Offaly bank with the main River Shannon at Meelick on the Co Galway bank.
At Meelick there is about 200 to 300 m of bank fishing in total.

According to the Annals of the Four Masters, " he afterwards took Meelick and Breac-Chluain (Brackloon Castle); slew Donogh the son of Colla, together with the others of the warders and then destroyed and ravaged the entire country.
Murchadh O’Madden was the founder of Portumna Abbey in 1426 while his grandson established Meelick Abbey in 1479.
The O’Madden family seems to have retained Meelick as one of their seats until it was destroyed by the sons of Redmond na Scuab Bourke and other Burkes, in 1595.  Nothing survives of this castle, the site of which is thought to be close to the friary.

The first indication we have that sport flourished in Bohola is the account of a football match played at Oldcastle between Bohola and Meelick, and reported in the Western People of February 23, 1918.
Bohola ran out the winners of that contest on a final scoreline of 2 goals and 1 point to Meelick's 1 point.
Some of the Meelick players were O'Doherty, Galvin, Rowley, Murphy, Mulligan, McNally, Ludlaw, O'Neill and O'Dowd.

Most cruisers pass through Victoria Lock totally unaware of the history of Meelick and the interesting places to visit.
This walk is along an embankment that runs from Meelick to Portumna.
It strikes me that a very nice circular route could be achieved going up the river and back down by the derelict canal, provided one could cut back across to the lock.

The Shannon at Meelick Weir is an attractive venue located about 8 kms downstream of Banagher.
From the Chicken Run described on this guide, continue downstream along the lane which flanks the river on your left until you meet a cruiser jetty.
Meelick Weir can be accessed by walking beyond the jetty, over a foot style and walking downstream about 150 meters to the sluices.

On Sunday Killimordaly went down to Meelick-Eyrecourt by 1 - 11 to 1 - 8.
Tony Keady and David Kelly traded goals in a game which Meelick won by three points.
In the other Group A match Kilconieron came right back in contention courtesy of a 3 - 15 to 2 - 7 win over Kinvara.

 Week 2 - Predict the weekend Games Competition
Niall and Martin Corcoran were excellent throughout but you would have to question leaving Niall in corner back.
Meelick should have won but I guess they will eventually erect a statue to Liam Burke down in Kilconieron - the goal was in the last 5 minutes, was top quality and could only have come from Burke!
Overall after the few games I seen Portumna will cruise the championship, there could be one or two shocks in there yet, and we need better referres.

In Meelick Franciscan Church there is a fine collection of 17th and 18th century gravestones with good writing, both incised and in relief.
Two blocked arches may indicate the former presence of a south transept or a short aisle.
The other building may have been a large house.
