 50 killed in Meerut fire
According to the district administration, the number of deaths in the Victoria Park fire in Meerut has been grossly exaggerated by the media and the figure is much lower than what is being projected.
The city SSP, S S Yadav and the additional district magistrate Shirish Dubey, the total death toll in the fire is 31 and not 150 as was reported in some TV news channels.
At least 50 people, mostly women, were feared killed on Monday evening in a major fire accident in Meerut, 65 km from Delhi.

Meerut was city of Maydanava due to which it original name was also said to be 'Maya rastra'.
Meerut is situated in between 'Indraprastha' (Delhi) and 'Hastinapur'.
None of those provide a very satisfactory explanation for the name; but that Meerut was inhabited in very ancient times is evident from the fact that the Ashoka pillar that now stands on the ridge at Delhi was erected by the Great Buddhist Emperor in the 3rd century before Christ.

In 1976 Ghaziabad and Hapur Tehsil was separated from Meerut district.
The tahsils of the district in 1823 were Meerut, Pariksjitgarh, Khatauli, Kandhla, Dasna, Hapur and Sikandarabad.
Between 1804 and 1806 the parganas of Baghpat, Sarnawa, Loni, Chhaprauli, Dasana, Jalalabad and Dadri were placed in the charge of the residents at Delhi but later were attached to the southern division of Saharanpur, with a collector resident at Meerut, the revenue administration of the northern division being under the collector stationed at Saharanpur.

Origin: District Jyotiba Phule Nagarlies in the west of Moradabad District adjoining Meerut, Ghaziabad and Buland Shahar.
The district came into being on 24th April 1997 in the memory of famous social reformer Sant Mahatama Jyotiba Phule by combining Amroha, Dhanora and Hasanpur Tehsils of Moradabad district vide UP Gazette no. 1071/1-5-97/224/sa-5 dated 15/4/1997 whose headoffice is situated in the ancient city Amroha.
The District has been the part of Moradabad district in the past which was a part of ‘Sarkar of Sambhal’ of Delhi Province during the Akbar regime.

 Togadia banned from Ghaziabad
Earier, Togadia, along with his party workers, tried to enter Ghaziabad district at around 8:30 am from the Garhmukteshwar border area at Jyotiba Phule Nagar (Gajraula), but was sent to Delhi via Meerut, Ghaziabad SSP Chander Prakash told PTI.
Vishwa Hindu Parishad leader Praveen Togadia, scheduled to distribute tridents at Hapur, was not allowed to enter Ghaziabad district and was sent to Delhi on Tuesday, official sources said.
The Allahabad high court, however, directed the administration to permit Togadia to enter the district to participate in a felicitation function at Gajraula.

According to reports, Mandi villagers took possession of the hoard despite pleas from local authorities, and soon some gold pieces, which they described as "small, round but flat pieces, covered with dirt," were being melted down by traders in a local gold market.
