Each meeting is conducted as a meeting for worship for church affairs (this is described in Chapter 3 of Quaker Faith and Practice).
Agenda papers for Meeting for Sufferings are posted out to members about 10 days before the meeting so they can read them and make any appropriate preparations such as phoning the authors for clarification or consulting members in their meeting.
Meeting for Sufferings on 3rd March asked Meetings in England and Wales to respond to a paper on charitable organisations by 1st September.

The Management Meeting (8.22) is accountable to the committee for the management of the central work of Britain Yearly Meeting within policies determined by Meeting for Sufferings.
Membership: twelve members of Meeting for Sufferings, appointed from names submitted by its nominations committee for a three-year period beginning and ending at a Yearly Meeting, one third retiring annually though eligible for re-appointment for a second term and exceptionally for a third.
The clerk and assistant clerk shall be appointed annually by Meeting for Sufferings on the nomination of Meeting for Sufferings Committee from among the appointed members.

Indulged meeting — A newly formed meeting for worship which requests and is granted the care and oversight of a local monthly meeting.
Men’s meeting — Monthly, quarterly, and yearly meetings for business were held by men and women in separate sessions until the late 1800’s and early 1900’s when men and women gradually began to meet in joint session.
Representative meeting or committee — is appointed by and given administrative and executive authority to act for the Yearly Meeting between its annual sessions.  Earlier names for this body were the Meeting for Sufferings and General Committee.

 A precious patchwork: Britain Yearly Meeting's Book of Christian Discipline
At our first meeting in the autumn of 1986 we were joined by a member of the previous revision committees whose work had resulted in Christian faith and practice (1961) Advices and queries (1964) and Church government (1967).
Then Meeting for Sufferings received minutes from two Monthly Meetings and one central department, and the process of considering then undertaking revision was set in train by appointing a Memorandum Group to report to Yearly Meeting in 1986.
Then in 1990, with drafts of chapters prepared, the committee regrouped to work on 'coverage and balance', on church government, on Advices and queries (to be edited after the experience of living with Questions and counsel), and on introductions, which of course needed to be written last.

When the clerk feels she has the sense of the meeting, she stops recognizing standing Friends and, with the help of the assistant clerk, begins to write the minute.
No meeting, except the Meeting for Sufferings which met all day, lasted more than two hours, and minutes were written and approved as they arose.
This may or may not be a model for meetings for business in North America, but we still need to respond to the query that asks if our meetings for business are held in a spirit of worship.

The Friend will probably bring their concern to their business meeting to be tested, that is to see if it is a true concern or simply a notion.
It can be as shorthand for meeting for worship, or it can refer to a meeting of Quakers that has gathered for business and administrative matters, for example: preparative meeting, monthly meeting, Six Weeks Meeting and yearly meeting.
Overseer - a member of a meeting charged with responsibility for the general welfare of the members of that meeting.

For some purposes, monthly meetings are grouped into general meetings which provide joint facilities for a wider region.
All members of monthly meetings in Britain are members of Britain Yearly Meeting which, as the name suggests, meets in session once per year.

The Meeting for Sufferings was established in 1756.
As the Yearly Meeting grew larger in size, the responsibilities of the Meeting for Sufferings widened to embrace all general operations of the Yearly Meeting, including the supervision and dissemination of religious publications; maintenance of statistical information on meetings and membership; and administration of bequests from Friends and trust funds from discontinued meetings.
In general, all boxes of miscellaneous papers include minutes from other meetings, rough copies of minutes of Meeting for Sufferings, drafts of letters, epistles, petitions, memorials, addresses, lists of members, reports from committees and from trustees of various funds.

 BRITAIN YEARLY MEETING
My most radical suggestion is that Meeting for Sufferings (MfS) should be divested of direct responsibility for what is now called Quaker Peace and Social Witness (QPSW), the main part of which was formerly called Quaker Peace and Service and prior to that Friends Service Council (FSC).
Those whose constituents feel a need to continue to meet should be encouraged to do so but their status would be similar to that of recognised special interest groups.
I have served as a Clerk to a Monthly Meeting (Orlando, Florida) as an Overseer and an Elder and as Clerk to the Premises Committee of a busy Meeting House (Westminster), on a Central Committee, on Meeting for Sufferings and as a representative of BYM on FWCC.

In March 1941 Frank spoke at Meeting for Sufferings in Leicester, on the BBC and Liberty; he spoke at Meeting for Sufferings in York in April, and again in July, on India.
Though he was suffering with angina, and developed a bit of a cough while he was there, when he got back he was suddenly taken much worse, and he died at about 9:00 p.m.

I was led to a deeper insight into Quaker procedures when it was announced to our Meeting that the Clerk (=Chairman) of Meeting for Sufferings had been 'led to write to Harry and William'.
This led me to realise the great goodness of god, who realised that to wait for the authorisation of an assembled Meeting for Sufferings would mean that the letter arrived too late for their hour of grief.
Through gnosis, that is, through the direct line from god, which clerks of meetings have in most abundance, through their apostolic succession, thinking and research which is clearly not leading the Right Way, can be pre-empted.

The escalation of fighting in Vietnam, particularly the bombing of Hanoi and Haiphong and the plight of the Vietnamese civilian population, led a group of Friends attending this conference to convene and discuss ways in which action might be taken.

They told us that the small group of people present at the March meeting has led to the need to have a feasibility study to see whether there is enough interest within Europe to actually carry out the large planning tasks required.
A comment in Meeting for Sufferings during its consideration of the status of Listed Informal Groups prompts us to clarify our status as a General Meeting.

The Ohio Yearly Meeting of Friends (Quaker) records, located at Malone College, Canton, Ohio, were transferred for microfilming to the Center for Archival Collections in April 1987, with the assistance of Malone College personnel.
The Ohio Yearly Meeting of Friends, Mt. Pleasant/Damascus, Ohio (now Evangelical Friends Church, Eastern Region) collection (1760-1965) provides the researcher with a great quantity of statistical information on membership activities such as births, marriages, removals, transfers, and death.
Administrative information is available through the minutes of the various meetings held by the Friends, including the Women Friends, Preparative, Select Preparative, Monthly, and other meetings.
