Retronauts 3: Mega Man... Powered Up? from 1UP.com
Mega Man wasn't inhumanly difficult by any means, but there were plenty of tricky parts (like the broken lifts in Gutsman's stage and the vanishing blocks in Iceman's level) that required careful attention, good timing and an awful lot of perseverance.
Adam Silver: The original Mega Man has aged surprisingly well for a linear, side scrolling platformer/shooter, probably because you choose the order you play the linear levels in and that order requires some strategy, but it isn't worth playing today.
Mega Man's (too many) sequels improved upon the original with superior graphics and sound; less punishing difficulty; passcode (and, in part 8, memory card) saves; more creative level designs, boss robots, and weapons; helper items and robots; and--you can't write about the original Mega Man without mentioning this--far superior box art.

Mega Man Zero 3 Review - Portable   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-08)
The two main things that help the Mega Man series stand out from other side-scrolling action games are its level designs, which are typically tricky and memory-intensive (requiring many deaths to master), and the various weapon and suit upgrades the games put at your disposal.
These include the mega buster cannon, the Z-Saber sword, and the shield boomerang that were in the previous game, as well as a new weapon, called the recoil rod, which can be used like a pogo stick to bounce high into the air.
The background and character graphics in Mega Man Zero 3 are a little behind the times when compared with similar games like Metroid: Zero Mission or Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow, particularly because Capcom recycled some of the graphics from Mega Man Zero 2 to put this game together.

The levels are fairly long for a Mega Man game which makes them rather frustrating at times (you only have 3 lives and when you die you are forced to start all the way back at either the beginning or the midpoint).

IGN: Mega Man Zero 3 Review
Mega Man Zero 3 traverses extremely familiar territory to the point where it feels like deja vu, but this time it's a lot less intimidating and more fun because of it.
The past two Mega Man Zero games were excellent in their own right, and Mega Man Zero 3 doesn't deviate much from the formula or story from those previous two games.
In fact, the story picks up from the last game without much of a gap in time, and the tale is told via the same hybrid of cutting back and forth between talking sprites and awesomely handpainted still screens that scroll dynamically during particularly "surprising" moments in the plot structure.
