In other words, Mega Man X is exactly the same story as all the earlier numbered Mega Man titles.
X is the same light blue he always is, the levels' colors are that odd slightly greyish shade they've been since the first game, and even the Bosses all have that too-familiar look to them.
Particularly niggling are the sound of X powering up (sounds cute the first couple of times, but gets increasingly irritating as time goes by) and the one-size-fits-all death sound for the bad guys.

Mega Man X was released in December 1993.
The reason is that it takes place a century later than the NES Mega Man games, with 'Mega Man X' fighting the reploids, copies of his design, who have gone maverick, and their leader, Sigma.
About how sloppy and crappy this looks, think of it this way, when you have done one run where final sigma can kill you in two hits, another where you can't lose life so you can one-hit kill bosses, it is nice to be able to relax a bit and shoot mindlessly.
