 Game Reviews - AOL Games
Whereas Maverick Hunter X, released last month, was a remake of the original Mega Man X for the SNES using updated 3D visuals and some revamped cutscenes and character designs, Mega Man Powered Up goes back even further into the Mega Man lore--all the way back to the beginning, in fact.
Powered Up, for all intents and purposes, is very much Mega Man. All the same bosses are on hand, and if you pick the "old style" game, the level designs are basically identical to the 1987 version.
It invented the style of gameplay that has been a staple of the Mega Man series over the last couple of decades, but it also was the kind of punishing hard that might lead a lesser man to take his own life.

Mega Man can't move fast with this on, and he can't use a powered up plasma shot, nor can he slide, but he can do some serious damage to enemies in this state.
Also, unlike in Mega Man 4 and 6, if you get hit when charging/charged up, you will lose the charge, so be careful to avoid hits while charging or being charged up, because it's a pain to have to recharge after being hit.
Instead, just be careful and take your time here, because this can frustrate players, especially players new to the game.

Electronic Gaming Monthly: Mega Man X7
Jon D: I’m so over the tired Mega Man X formula: Running and shooting through stages, rescuing Reploids, and building my character’s stats to beat the dumb bosses (one of which, this time, is a giant onion) was thoroughly played out by X5.
The main problems I had with X7 were the uneven voice acting (Zero and Axl = good, everyone else = bad), and the fact that although Mega Man’s signature difficulty level remains intact, it’s now the result of poor camera angles, not just brutally challenging level design.
Prognosis: Let’s make this the last Mega Man X game, please
