Megachilidae   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-08)
Other features that help distinguish the Megachilidae in the Southeastern U.S. are the lack of a basitibial plate (except in Lithurgus), 2 submarginal cells in the wing with the second submarginal rather long.
The family Megachilidae is well represented in Florida.
One subfamily, the Megachilinae is found in Florida with four tribes.

In this study, three bee species; a solitary bee, Osmia cornifrons (Radoszkowski) (Hymenoptera: Megachilidae); honey bees; and alfalfa leafcutting bees, ; Megachile rotundata (Fab) (Hymenoptera: Megachilidae), were compared for their utility as early season pollinators of Brassicaceae in field cages.
They use the leaf cuttings to line their nests, which are constructed in the soil, rotten wood, hollow stems, or other cavities.

The entomological evidence. Rozen JG, Jr, Eickwort GC . 1997;42(3): 394-397.   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-08)
Abstract: The primary task was to investigate and explain the source of blockage in an elbow (B2) and in other parts of the fuel supply unit recovered from the wreckage of a private airplane.
A small clump of pollen associated with a disc-shaped gummy mass of plant fibers suggested that bees belonging to the family Megachilidae might have been responsible for accumulating these plant materials.
Examination of other parts of the fuel control unit revealed three dead adult bees identified as Osmia gaudiosa Cockerell (Megachilidae) and a single dead individual of the genus Ashmeadiella (Megachilidae).

 Leaf-Cutter Bees
I always like late spring and summer, because as soon as my roses start looking good, I can be pretty sure the leaf-cutter bees are not far behind.
Leaf-cutter bees are solitary bees in the family Megachilidae (but remember, not all megachilids cut leaves).
Those that do cut leaves use them to line their nests, which are constructed in a variety of places, such as tunnels in the ground, under stones, in the pith of brambles (Frost 1959) or excavated in wood.

Adult females spend most of their time searching for hosts or waiting near host nests until they are available for parasitism.
Like their parasites, all hosts are in the family Megachilidae.

Host-plant specialization in western palearctic anthidiine bees (Hymenoptera: apoidea: Megachilidae)
To determine the extent of host-plant specialization, the pollen sources of the 72 anthidiine species (family Megachilidae, subfamily Megachilinae, tribe Anthidiini) of Europe, North Africa, and Asia Minor were investigated by microscopic analysis of [approximately equal to] 1800 pollen loads of females.
By this measure, 31 species (43%) were oligolectic (relatively specialized to pollen source) at the level of plant tribe, plant subfamily, or plant family.
