The genus Megadyptes ("large diver") contains one species of penguin.
Megadyptes antipodes are commonly known as Yellow-eyed Penguins.
In the language of the Maori people native to New Zealand, they are known as "hoiho" or "noise-shouter".

A census of Yellow-eyed Penguin, Megadyptes antipodes, landing sites on Campbell Island in the New Zealand subantarctic in winter 1992 recorded 1034 birds.
From mark–recapture analysis of banded birds at one site, the total population was estimated at 1347 91 birds, a decrease of 41% since 1988, when there were 2277 122 birds.

Abstract Faecal samples from yellow-eyed penguins, Megadyptes antipodes, were collected at Boulder Beach, Otago Peninsula, New Zealand, between July and September 1993, and examined for helminth eggs and protozoa.
Yellow-eyed penguins, in this study, had low burdens of gut parasites, suggesting that the parasites do not threaten the survival of the penguins.

Experimental feeding of Yellow-eyed Penguins (Megadyptes antipodes) with meals containing cephalopod beak pairs and otoliths of known weight, and subsequent flushing of stomachs at 2-48 h intervals after feeding, were carried out to determine the rate of digestion of beaks and otoliths.
Otoliths and beaks were placed in HCI to observe changes.

Abstract Necropsy was performed on each of 124 yellow-eyed penguins (Megadyptes antipodes) opportunistically collected from eastern Otago, in New Zealand.
A review of causes of death is presented, including 22% due to predation, 13% to starvation and in 18% no cause was recognised.
