#06-519: 08-09-1906 Citgo Petroleum and Environmental Manager Indicted for Environmental Crimes
According to the indictment, Citgo operated its Corpus Christi refinery in 2000 with more than 57 megagrams of benzene in waste streams that were exposed to the air.
Citgo is also charged with operating in 2001 with more than seven megagrams of benzene in its exposed waste streams.
Regulations governing the construction and operation of new sources of hazardous air pollutants require oil water separators to be fitted with emission control devices to prevent the release of benzene and other harmful chemicals into the environment.

Physical or operational changes made to an existing landfill solely to comply with an emission guideline are not considered construction, reconstruction or modification for the purposes of this section.
The landfill design capacity may be calculated in either megagrams or cubic meters for comparison with the exemption values.
The owner or operator of an MSW landfill subject to this section with a design capacity greater than or equal to 2.5 million megagrams and 2.5 million cubic meters is subject to title V permitting requirements under Part 201 of this Title.

The mass of nondegradable solid waste may be subtracted from the total mass of solid waste in a particular section of the landfill when calculating a value for R, if the documentation of the nature and amount of such wastes is maintained.
This increase in design capacity may result from an increase in the permitted volume of the landfill or an increase in the density as documented in the annual recalculation required in Paragraph 18.3.7(f) of this Chapter.

We found that most of the carbon stored in soils over the past 40 years is near the surface of the soil in either forest floor material or so-called ‘light fraction’ material in the surface mineral soils (Figure 3).
When combined with estimates of carbon losses from DDW (0.10 megagrams of carbon per year), our results suggest that DDW may be accumulating at Howland Forest at a rate of about 0.20 megagrams of carbon per year, a number that is similar to that obtained for soils.

A portion of the PM10 could be reduced and the impact lessened (high fuel moisture content) by burning when less fuel is consumed, mechanically treating fuels so that burning is not needed, and conducting burns when dispersion conditions and wind direction are favorable.

Instead of tonne, the term megagram could be used, but this has never caught on.
One possible explanation as to why the tonne has remained an official unit of measurement for so long, without any attempts to replace it with megagrams etc. is that the kilogram is the only base measurement unit that has a prefix already in place.
In English, the word “ton” is used to refer to an old, non-metric measurement of roughly the same size as the tonne.

Megagrams or Metric Tons?   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-09-16)
A megagram, abbreviated as Mg., is an alternative term for a metric ton, based upon the mass’ weight of 1,000,000 grams.
Since both terms describe the same mass measurement, many metrication experts are urging adoption of megagram in place of metric ton (or tonne) to avoid confusion.
As many states continue to switch to metrics, the term “ton” may be interpreted as one of several measurement units.
