  ADW: Megaptera novaeangliae: Information
Megaptera novaeangliae is second only to blue whales in absolute thickness of blubber.
Megaptera novaeangliae regularly leaves colder waters (where the whales feed during the spring, summer, and fall) to goes to a winter range of shallow tropical banks (where feeding does not occur).

CiteULike: Structure of the cerebral cortex of the humpback whale, Megaptera novaeangliae (Cetacea, Mysticeti, ...   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-04)
We observed several differences between Megaptera and odontocetes, such as a highly clustered organization of layer II over the occipital and inferotemporal neocortex, whereas such pattern is restricted to the ventral insula in odontocetes.
A striking observation in Megaptera was the presence in layer V of the anterior cingulate, anterior insular, and frontopolar cortices of large spindle cells, similar in morphology and distribution to those described in hominids, suggesting a case of parallel evolution.
These observations demonstrate that Megaptera differs from Odontoceti in certain aspects of cortical cytoarchitecture and may provide a neuromorphologic basis for functional and behavioral differences between the suborders as well as a reflection of their divergent evolution.

Appearing almost simultaneously with Megaptera's full-length The Curse Of The Scarecrow, the release of the EP Beautiful Chaos was apparently also delayed considerably.
The strong textures of the sounds, and the dense layering makes this one of Megaptera's most accomplished tracks, and it is probably the most compelling piece on this CD.
Aside from momentary impulses of machinery and tinkling clockwork, this track is more or less composed of dark, oppressive sheets of sound slowly overlapping and merging in murky and foreboding patterns, with a stream of sequenced beats and harmonies snaking its way through the music.

This 2 CD release collects both Megaptera's initial vinyl-only album "Songs From The Darkness" and a remix CD of their 2nd release (the name escapes me).
Fusing low drones, distorted bass rumbles, pounding industrial automated beats, and heavy sonic atmospheres, with a multitude of horror movie samples, Megaptera create oppressively dark ambience that's not just uneasy listening but frankly scary stuff.
If you can appreciate the kind of music (if you can call it that!) that doesn't inspire you to put your hands in the air and wave them like you just don't care, then this is a fine example of Megaptera's unhinged collective mind.

But arrive they did, and today the waters around the main Hawaiian Islands of Kaua`i, O`ahu, Hawai`i, Maui, Moloka`i, Lana`i and Kaho`olawe constitute one of the world’s most important habitats for the endangered North Pacific humpback whale (Megaptera novaeangliae).
