MEGATHERIUM - LoveToKnow Article on MEGATHERIUM
(properly Megaloiherium), a huge extinct edentate mammal from the Pleistocene deposits of Buenos Aires, typifying the family Megatheriidae (or Megalotheriidae), and by far the largest representative of the Edentata.
Except, indeed, for its relatively shorter limbs Megathierium americanum rivalled an elephant in bulk, the total length of the skeleton being 18 feet, five of which are taken up by the tail.
The Megatheriidae, which include a number of genera, are collectively e Megatherium, from the specimen in the Museum of the Royal College of Surgeons of England.

 Brown Throated three-toed sloth
Three ancestral ground sloth families are said to have once existed; Megatheriidae the South American giant ground sloth whose ancestors were arboreal, and the Megalonychidae and Mylondontidae which were always terrestrial ground sloths.
Although the Megatheriidae family is said to have been arboreal, all three families are said to have once been fully terrestrial and obtained sizes ranging from an averaged size dog to an elephant (Walker 1991).
It is suggested by Webb (1985), that the genus Choloepus evolved from Megalonychidae, and the genus Bradypus resembles the long extinct ground sloth family Megatheriidae.

Zoological Journal of the Linnean Society Abstract   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-07)
These results imply that the split between the two extant sloth genera is ancient, dating back perhaps as much as 40 Myr, and that the similarities between the two taxa, including their suspensory locomotor habits, present one of the most dramatic examples of convergent evolution known among mammals.
The monophyly of the three traditional ground sloth families Megatheriidae, Megalonychidae and Mylodontidae is confirmed in the present study, and the late Miocene—Pleistocene nothrotheres are shown to form a clade.
The relationships within the families Megatheriidae and Mylodontidae are fully and consistently resolved, although the hypothesized scheme of relationships among the late Miocene to Pleistocene members of the mylodontid subfamily Mylodontinae differ strongly from any proposed by previous authors.

The Megatheriidae consist of two main groups, megatheres and nothrotheres.
They had dermal ossicles (small boney plates underneath the thick hide) and like the Megatheriidae, the toes on their hind limbs curved underneath the feet.
