Mehmet Ali Agca (born January 9, 1958) is a Turkish terrorist who shot Pope John Paul II on May 13th, 1981 in an assassination atempt.
Agca was sentenced to life imprisionment in Italy, but was pardoned by president Carlo Azeglio Ciampi in June 2000.
Agca returned to Turkey, where he was imprisoned for the murder of a newspaper editor.

As to the result of the Pope’s forgiveness, Agca fell to his knees and kissed the hand of Pope John Paul II.
