MEHERPUR, Dec 6:—Thirty four years ago on the night of December 6, the first capital of Bangladesh—Mujibnagar in Meherpur was liberated from the occupation of the Pakistan mili­tary junta.
Virtually, Meherpur was liber­ated in the night of 6 December, 1971 and the freedom fighters en­tered the town chanting the pow­erful slogan 'Joy Bangla' with fes­tive mood and hoisted the National Flag.

 NFB - Arsenic menace haunts thousands in Meherpur - 05 Apr 2002
MEHERPUR, Apr 4:—Thousands of people in three upazilas of the district have been passing their days amid arsenic menace which has been detected in underground water of the district.
Out of 64 districts, 59 are arsenic affected of which Meherpur district is the badly arsenic affected district.
A test case the DPHE, Meherpur, had undertaken a scheme to dig 40 ring wells in the district initially for supplying arsenic free drinking water and contractors have been selected in June, 2000 to complete the work by July, 2000, but the work started recently.

The prosecution story in brief is that Manik Ferdous raped SSC candidate Lubna Nahid Dipa, 15, daughter of Azizur Rahman on March 19, 2003, and then killed her.

Flood waters spread to Chuadanga district on 23 September, to Jhenidah district on 24 September, to Jessore district on 26 and to Satkhira district on 28 September.
Water levels are slowly receding in most of the affected areas of Meherpur, Chuadanga, Jhenidah and Jessore districts, but downstream in Satkhira district waters continue to rise.
