September 4: Saifuzzaman alias Shoaib alias Ripon, second-in-command of the PBCP-Janajuddha faction, was killed in a shootout with the RAB personnel at Katakhali crossing in the Rupsha sub-district of Khulna district.
February 9: In the Jhenidah district, a PBCP- Janajuddha regional leader, Sajahan Ali, was killed in an encounter with the police at Lakhmipur village.

The district of Magura was flooded on 2 October as a result of an outflow of water from Jhenidah district.
The upazilas (sub-districts) which have experienced the worst damages are Mujibnagar and Gangni in Meherpur district, Jibonnagar and Damurhuda in Chuadanga, Maheshpur in Jhendiha, Sharsha and Jhikargacha in Jessore, and Sadar, Kalaroa, Tala and Debhata in Shatkhira.
As a whole the flood-affected districts have food surpluses, though the people affected by the floods and stranded in specific areas were found by the mission to be receiving irregular and inadequate food supplies.

 NFB - Arsenic menace haunts thousands in Meherpur - 05 Apr 2002
MEHERPUR, Apr 4:—Thousands of people in three upazilas of the district have been passing their days amid arsenic menace which has been detected in underground water of the district.
Out of 64 districts, 59 are arsenic affected of which Meherpur district is the badly arsenic affected district.
A test case the DPHE, Meherpur, had undertaken a scheme to dig 40 ring wells in the district initially for supplying arsenic free drinking water and contractors have been selected in June, 2000 to complete the work by July, 2000, but the work started recently.

Out of 64 districts, 59 districts are arsenic affected of whom perhaps Meherpur district is the highest arsenic invaded district.
A total of 500 hand pump tubwells of different villages of the district had been tested by Jaharul Islam applying the herbal method which were later tested by the indigenous and foreign experts including the DPHE and NGOs applying the modern kit method but the result was same.
