Mehmed V (sometimes also Mahommed V; known as Mehmed V Reşad (or Reşat) or Reshid Effendi) (November 2, 1844 July 3, 1918) was the 39th Ottoman Sultan.
He is also attributed to have been the 99th Ottoman caliph of Islam, at least should the Ottoman dynasty have taken the Caliphate in 1517, a fact disputed by some.
The grave of Sultan Mehmed V is in the Eyup district of modern Istanbul.

Mehmed Tevfik Bey explains that when the three sisters, one from the house- hold of Sultan Abdülhamid, the other from the household of Sultan Mehmed V, and their elder sister were exiled to Bursa, he invited them to stay at his house until they found a permanent home of their own.
After the death of Sultan Murad V in 1904, one of his favourites together with a large number of women from her household were allocated pensions of 10 lira each and exiled to Bursa.

The correct attitude of the sultan did not save him from the suspicion of intriguing with the powerful reactionary elements in the state, a suspicion confirmed by his attitude towards the counter-revolution of April 13, when an insurrection of the soldiers and the Moslem populace of the capital overthrew the committee and the ministry.
The committee, restored by the Salonica troops, now decided on Abd-ul-Hamid's deposition, and on April 27 his brother Reshid Effendi was proclaimed sultan as Mahommed V.

Sultan Mehmed, the Conqueror had his first palace built in Beyazit, where University of Istanbul stands today, however later on he had Topkapi Palace and the walls surrounding it built in 1462-1478 and left his first palace to move in the greater new one.

It was the triumvirate that was responsible for the Ottomans allying with the Germans and Austrians in World War I. In 1918, the Ottomans and the British signed an armistice, which effectively ended the war.
