MEHSANA, June 27: With its literacy rate standing at 75.54 in 2001, Mehsana stands fifth in Gujarat which holds fifteenth rank in the country with 69.97 average.
The reconstituted Mehsana is a bit ahead of Surat and Anand whose respective average literacy rates are 74.59 and 74.95 and it is only a shade behind Rajkot whose average is 75.88.
Mehsana's position among its 25 districts is far from satisfactory.

In a tragic incident, 28 persons, including farm labourers, were burnt alive when a 10,000 strong mob attacked their houses and set them on fire by electric short circuit and blasting cooking gas cylinders at Sardarpur village of Vijapur taluka, according to official sources.
All the bodies of the victims were taken to Civil Hospital at Mehsana district town, the sources said.

In another fresh incident, at least 22 people were burnt alive by a mob in a village in Gujarat's Mehsana district on Friday night when it set on fire some houses and shops, police sources here said here.
The DSP of Mehsana district in North Gujarat said that 22 charred bodies have been recovered so far from 20 gutted houses.
The village, mostly inhabitated by farm labourers, was surrounded by a mob on Friday which set houses and shops on fire by using gas cylinders, the police said.
