The station is designed to facilitate the transportation of the residents of Mei Foo Sun Chuen housing etate, which has nearly 100 buildings and several schools, and eventually became the station between the Kowloon urban area and the new town of Tsuen Wan.
The MTR station is a simple through station with a central island platform, under a demolished road named Lai Wan Road between the rows of residential buildings in Mei Foo Sun Chuen housing estate.
Unlike Nam Cheong Station, the Mei Foo MTR station and the Mei Foo West Rail station are considerably far apart.

Mei Foo Station (美孚站 in Tradtional Chinese, 美孚站 in Simplified Chinese) is a station complex serving as an interchange between MTR Tsuen Wan Line and KCRC West Rail, Hong Kong.
The station holds the residents in the Mei Foo Sun Chuen (which has nearly 100 buildings and several schools, etc.) and eventually become the "edge" station between the Kowloon urban area and the Tsuen Wan new town.

Kwai Fong, Kwai Hing, Lai Chi Kok, and Cheung Sha Wan stations gained their present names before opening, and Mei Foo was also renamed from "Lai Chi Kok" to "Lai Wan." The other stations had their Chinese name changed when they opened, and were renamed in 1985 together with Mei Foo station.
Moreover, Mong Kok station was planned a bit further north of the present station, which would have taken the place of Price Edward station, and Sham Shui Po was planned a bit south of the present station.
