Elegance, for instance, could be expressed by depicting scenes with "gentlemen listening to the falling rain in a thatched cottage while drinking from a jade pot; seated gentlemen flanked by tall bamboo groves; or floating white clouds and a few birds chasing each other in a sky clearing after rain."
Another theory of poetry that proved highly influential among literati-painters and art critics was set forth by Mei Yaochen, a Song poet who sought to achieve "depth and primitive simplicity" in his works.
Once he remarked that poems "must be able to portray hard-to-catch scenes as if they leap up before the eyes, and imply meaning between the lines.

Hawes (Univ. of Technology, Sydney) changes this with this study, which he devotes to the poetic intercourse between two important political leaders and prolific poets, Ouyang Xiu (1007-72) and Mei Yaochen (1002-60).
Hawes also discusses the social function of poetry in Northern Song society, arguing that it is a realization of the Confucian ideal of harmonious social interaction.

Although Bai Juyi (who wrote twenty such poems) and others provide important Tang precedents, certain Song writers take the practice to new heights: Mei Yaochen and Huang Tingjian (with 143 and 147 examples, respectively) are the most notable practitioners of this sub-genre.
Two sets of poems by Huang Tingjian written in 1086 in response to gifts of incense provide an index of his poetic techniques and a fruitful contrast with the techniques of Su Shi (whose 117 gift-associated poems place him with Mei and Huang as the primary practitioners of the sub-genre).
In one series, Huang sees the incense in terms of the process by which it is made, or the ways in which it operates in the life of those who use it; there are both social and religious themes.
