  Dahshur and Meidum Pyramids
The principal building projects of Pharaoh Sneferu were located at Meidum (20 miles / 30 km south of modern Cairo) and Dahshur (12 miles / 20 km south of Cairo).
Although the possibility remains that this building was deliberately destroyed for ritual reasons, mainstream archaeology is convinced that the collapse was a result of inadequate engineering and that the Pyramid at Meidum represents a false step in Pyramid development.
Whatever engineering problems may have existed in the building of the Meidum and Bent Pyramids were resolved and the Red Pyramid has survived the ages in excellent condition, save the pilfering of it's fine limestone casing and its' royal treasures.

 Pyramid of Meidum, Egypt
The Pyramid of Meidum, 6mi/9km southwest of the village of that name, stands on the edge of the Western Desert Plateau, near the middle road into the Fayyum.
It is believed to have been begun by Huni, the last King of the third Dynasty, and completed by his successor Sneferu, founder of the fourth Dynasty and the immediate predecessor of Cheops, but was probably never used as a burial place.
The earliest structure, at the core of the pyramid, was a seven stepped mastaba modeled on the older Pyramid of Djoser at Saqqara and built over a knoll of rock which is still visible to a height of 130ft/40m.

Stadelmann, who believes that the pyramid in Meidum was built for Snefru from the outset, thinks that the complex and surrounding tombs belonged to the queen mother and the princes of a so-called first generation.

It would appear that many of the tombs built at Meidum were unfinished and never used for burials, probably due to the fact that Snefru moved his pyramid city to Dashur while constructing his pyramids there.

W-M: Construction of the Giza Pyramids, by Burke Thomas
The next structure of interest in the development of the Egyptian pyramid is the Meidum pyramid, which around the year 2600BC collapsed during the third stage of construction, the alignment of the outer walls [construction stages are mentioned in detail later in this paper].
The Meidum was a true pyramid, in that its outward shape was a tetrahedron.
Unfortunately, whether by reason of carelessness or laziness or simple lack of knowledge, the interior support for the pyramid partially collapsed and part of at least one pyramidal face was shorn off and to this day there are massive rubble mounds beneath the base of the pyramid.

They tunneled into the pyramid and discovered that the core is composed of five accretion layers, inclined at an angle of seventy-five degrees and standing on a square base about thirty-eight meters on a side, whose outer surfaces were built of carefully dressed limestone blocks.
He even reconstructed, on the basis of the ruins, a corridor leading toward the pyramid from the southeast, which Petrie discovered in 1910, and which in his opinion was used to transport construction materials.

The Meidum pyramid uses larger blocks but it is not as well constructed, the filling stones are rough not smooth, and it only has half the buttresses as the earlier pyramids – and so Imhotep may have died by the time of its actual construction.
The change from a north to east facing pyramid temple, causeway and valley temple in front of the pyramids indicated a rise in the religious importance of the sun god Re and the place of the king’s resurrection and afterlife.

Egyptian History - Dr. Zahi Hawass
Indeed, with sides 183.5m long it would be much larger than any of the stepped pyramids; but during construction the architect faced many structural problems and he had no choice but to change the angle of his 54 degree slope, reducing it to 43degree21' and creating the so-called Bent Pyramid.
His theory supposes that the Dahshur architect had learned that the Meidum pyramid was collapsing and so decided to, change the angle at Dahshur.
This theory has many factors against it: the Meidum pyramid was considered by Egyptians of the New Kingdom as a glory, and it seems that the collapse happened in the last century when farmers took stones to build modem constructions nearby.
