		The place was first mentioned in 982 A.D. and was chartered in 1344 A.D. Its inhabitants are known as Meininger.
		The fairy tale collector and writer Ludwig Bechstein was an archivist in Meiningen.

	Musical History
		Among its rich cultural traditions is the Meiningen Court Orchestra, which is over 300 years old (first mentioned in October 1690), and its historical journey towards becoming a state orchestra (1922-1952) and finally the Meiningen Theatre orchestra, which it is today.
		Georg Caspar Schürmann (in office from 1702-1707) and Johann Ludwig Bach (in office from 1711-1731) - the founder of the Meiningen Bach side line - were responsible for the high musical standard during the first decades in their capacity as conductors of the court orchestra.
		Günter Raphael lived in Meiningen as a composer in succession of Brahms and Reger between 1934 and 1944.
