Meiobenthos - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The term meiobenthos was first coined in 1942 by Mare, but organisms that would fit into the meiofauna category have been studied since the 18th century.
They can also be found on hard substrates living on algae, the phytal environment, and sessile invertebrates (barnacles, mussel beds, etc.).
Sampling the meiobenthos is clearly dependent upon the environment and whether quantitative or qualititative samples are required.

The dissertation is the first studies of meiobenthos on the shelf, continental slope and in the Black sea hollow.
Biological diversity and the character of meiofauna vertical distribution in Black sea along the oxigen/hydrogen sulphide gradient serve as a base for the revision of the adopted in science notion "lifelessness" of the anaerobic zone in the given water reservoir, which postulates an absence in it of any life, except microbial one.
In contrast to the literature data the results presented testify to a taxonomic diversity and great quantitative development of meiobenthos and free-living nematodes, in the bottom sediments under oxigen deficite in particular.

The hidden community – hydrothermal vent meiobenthos associated with Bathymodiolus aggregations from Mid-Atlantic ...
The overall density of meiobenthos at MAR (1780.8 ± 421.3; n = 3) was similar to that of EPR (2073.2 ± 303.7; n = 3) when related to a standardized volume of 10 ml of wet sediment.
This is the first time that the entire metazoan meiobenthos was identified from a specific moderate diffuse flow vent habitat inhabited by mussel aggregations.
The mussel aggregation community is dominated by meiobenthic species and underlines the importance of meiobenthos in estimating the biodiversity of an ecosystem.

Contribution of ostracods and oligochaetes to the total meiobenthos biomass, as a rule, was large (up to 75% and 70% correspondingly).
Relative number and biomass of meiobenthos separate groups was similar to that observed in freshwater zone.
Analysing meiobenthos dynamics, it is possible to note that in 1997 substantial growth of total meiobenthos biomass took place due to an increase in the numbers of Ostracods.

HYDROTHERMAL VENT MEIOBENTHOS ASSOCIATED WITH MUSSEL AGGREGATIONS FROM EAST PACIFIC RISE AND MID-ATLANTIC RIDGE
The central objective of this study was to identify and quantify for the first time the entire metazoan meiobenthic community associated with mussel aggregations of Bathymodiolus thermophilus from the East Pacific Rise (EPR) 11°N, and of B.
Related to a standardized volume of 10 ml sediment, the overall density of meiobenthos at MAR (1764.5 ± 341.5 individuals) was similar to that at EPR (1951.1 ± 216.7), while biomass was nearly twice as large at EPR than at MAR. Approximately 4000 individuals were identified to species level for community structure analysis.
The trophic structure of hydrothermal vent meiobenthos was similar at both sites and dominated by primary consumers (>80%), followed by parasites.

ePIC: The meiobenthos of the Molloy Deep (5600 m), Fram Strait, Arctic Ocean
The meiobenthos (including foraminiferans) of the Molloy Deep (Fram Strait, Arctic Ocean) was studied along a 15 km transect crossing the deep in NW-SE direction.
Foraminiferans were the dominant taxa of the total meiobenthos (48.5 - 59.9 %), whereas nematodes dominated the metazoan meiofauna (91.7 - 95.8 %).
The total meiofauna of the Molloy Deep consisted of relatively small organisms compared to other/shallower oceanic regions, which could not be explained by reduced food availability to the benthos.

The meiobenthos of Tuggerah Lakes appears to be typical of isolated systems that experience little or no tidal exchange.
The relatively low abundance of meiobenthos may mean that the functional role of this group in remineralisation and regeneration of nutrients is diminished relative to other coastal lakes.
The meiobenthos are still important, however, particularly when their qualitative role in stimulating production elsewhere in the food web is considered.

Abstract: Abundance of deep-sea meiobenthos off Sanriku, Northeastern Japan was studied quantitatively using sediment samples collected by box corers or an Okean grab.
Sampling stations were established along a line transect which covered areas from off the mouth of Otsuchi Bay to the abyssal plain of the western Pacific crossing over the Japan Trench (water depths from 120 m to 7460 m).
Abundance of meiobenthos decreased linearly with water depth down to 1503 m and became constant at stations deeper than 4130 m.

We will directly assess toxicant effects on meiobenthos genetic diversity in the field, and in lab culture, using the molecular techniques of polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and gene sequencing.
These techniques will be used in a seasonal field study over two full years with the most abundant meiobenthic copepod in this ecosystem to assess natural and toxicant-influenced temporal changes in population genetic structure.
For the first time, direct correlations will be possible between field-effects toxicant/genetic assessments and controlled laboratory culturing/genetic studies using meiofaunal populations of knowing genetic diversity, and sediments containing known toxicants loadings.

ePIC: Metazoan meiobenthos along continental margins: a review
Knowledge on the deep-sea meiobenthos has increased considerably during recent decades, and attempts have been made to relate standing stocks with various environmental factors.
The flux of organic matter from surface productivity to the seafloor has been proven to exert considerable control on benthic standing stocks.
Results clearly demonstrate regional differences on global scale: richer communities were generally found in areas with increased productivity and enhanced input of organic matter to the seafloor.
