 Dai Nippon Meisho Kagami
The series Dai Nippon Meisho Kagami, "Mirrors of Famous Commanders of Japan", is among the popular ones of Yoshitoshi.
At the time, when Dai Nippon Meisho Kagami was published, Japan was under the impression of the events of the Satsuma rebellion - a last uprise of the old Samurai forces against radical Meiji reforms.
It looks like the Satsuma rebellion stirred an interest of the public in images of military and historic events.

Although Meisho Samson started favorite, he was by no means a short favorite (3.8) as the race was considered to by wide open by Japanese punters.
But it was not to be, as Meisho Samson (a son of Opera House) gradually gathered in the leader and was actually eased down in the last 50m by veteran jockey Mamoru Ishibashi, and although the margin at the end was only a neck, it was a very convincing win.
Meisho Samson has now won the first two legs of the Japanese 3yo classic triple crown, and has the chance to win the triple crown by winning the Grade 1 Kikuka Sho (3000m) to be run in the Autumn.

Brooklyn Museum: Exhibitions: Hiroshige's One Hundred Famous Views of Edo: Famous Places of Edo
Meisho is usually translated as "famous places" or "celebrated spots." However, the literal meaning—"a place with a name"—better conveys the oldest sense of meisho as an essentially literary place with conventionalized poetic attributes.
Hiroshige's broader definition of meisho was based, in part, on the gazetteer Edo meisho zue ("illustrated famous places of Edo") and prefigured in his earlier work Ehon Edo miyage ("souvenirs of Edo," 1850–c.
The One Hundred Famous Views of Edo was part of a broad trend in mid-nineteenth-century Edo toward the careful exploration of the geography and history of the city, reflecting both a general spirit of empirical observation in the nineteenth century and the maturity of Edo as an urban center.
