  Antique China Porcelain & Collectibles
Meissen porcelain is a timeless treasure in the truest sense of the word.
It was in Meissen that perhaps the most famous of all antique China dinnerware was produced by Europeans, the unmistakable blue-and-white "Onion" pattern.
While modeled as closely as possible after a pattern first produced by the Chinese (for European consumption) the plates and bowls styled in the Meissen factory in 1740 adopted a feel that was distinctly their own.

 Meissen
The year in which the Diocese of Meissen was established is not known, the oldest extant records being forgeries; however, the record of endowment by Otto I in 971 is genuine.
In 1346 the diocese stretched from the Erzgebirge in the south to the mouth of the Neisse and to the Queis, on the east to the Oder, on the north to the middle course of the Spree.
The former began the magnificent Gothic cathedral, in which are buried nine princes of the House of Wettin; the latter, as notary and intimate friend of the Margrave of Meissen, afterwards the Emperor Charles IV, protected the interests of his church and increased the revenues of the diocese.

This attention to detail gives Meissen's 600 highly trained modelers and painters (who after at least three years of apprenticeship in the factory's own school, and often additional art studies at university, go on to specialize in painting just flowers or landscapes or animals) room to accommodate a certain amount of custom work.

The confusion between what is Meissen and what is, say, a Wales Japanese piece, seems to arise when the sticker has been removed leaving only the indelible marks under the base.
Further adding to the misunderstanding is the fact that these pieces are usually of a very fine character when comparing their delicacy of porcelain detailing and painting to other "Made in Japan" pieces.
However, when compared to true Meissen pieces, it becomes obvious that these are more "production line" than "one of a kind".
