Sultan Abdülaziz was impressed by the French educational system during his visit, and as soon as he came back to the country he announced the Edict of Public Education where a modern free compulsory education system was established for all children until the age of twelve.
In September 1868, influenced by the French Lycee, a school was established under the name "Lycée Impérial Ottoman de Galata-Sérai" (in Turkish: Galatasaray Mekteb-i Sultanisi).
French was the main language of instruction, most of the teachers were foreign, and the student body included members of all religious and ethnic communities from around the Empire : Turks, Arabs, Greeks, Armenians, Jews, Levantines, Bulgarians, Albanians etc...

Its history began with the construction of the Palace School on the hills of Galata in 1481.
The "Mekteb-i Sultani" (Sultan's School) was an Ottoman state institution which boasted a high standard of education at a time when no modern higher education institutions existed.
It is assumed that the school ceased functioning after 1881 as no documents relatıng to "Darulfünün-i Sultani" have been found to date beyond that year.

Vedat Tek is one of the two chief exponents of the movement in Turkish architecture known as First National Architecture.
After studying at Galatasaray Lycee (Mekteb-i Sultani) up to the second grade, he went to Paris in 1888 where he first completed studies at the École Monge before going on to study art at the Julian Academy.
He followed courses in engineering for a time at the École Centrale but after passing the exam for the Fine Arts College in Paris he began his architectrual studies there.
