 THOMAS AXWORTHY
Hurtig has returned to the theme of betrayal in The Vanishing Country, a cri de coeur that bemoans the perfidy of the Liberals in reneging on their 1993 promise to renegotiate the North American Free Trade Agreement.
Hurtig has some important things to say and his timing is impeccable, since the central issue on Canada's agenda, now that the fires of Quebec separation have banked, is how to define our ongoing relationship with the world's only hyperpower.
Hurtig's method is to amass a host of statistics drawn from a myriad of published sources buttressed by a generous sprinkling of quotations from favoured authors such as Dalton Camp, Richard Gwyn and Peter Newman.

Hurtig explains how missile defence will likely prompt a new arms race, as China and Russia respond to the United States by increasing the number of their missiles and warheads in order to maintain an assured deterrent, and India then responds to China, and then Pakistan to India, and so on.

Eye - Mushrooming clouds of fear - 11.11.04
Hurtig, Canada's favourite silver-haired nationalist and part-time radical blowhard, has assembled a clumsy but explosive case against the Liberal Party's decision to work with the US on the "Star Wars" ballistic missile defence (BMD) program.
To be fair, Mel has scads of evidence to back up his theses: government papers, secret documents, newspaper articles, but they're presented in such a weighty, dizzying, pell-mell fashion, reading one chapter of Rushing to Armageddon is akin to being hit on the head with 10 weeks of Alternet articles, wrapped around a brick.
The Martin government, Mel convincingly claims, has seriously misled the Canadian public about the exact details of this country's involvement with BMD.
