Mel Powell (1923-1998) was a composer of intricate works using serial and twelve-note techniques and a noted jazz pianist and arranger.

Powell's teaching career began at Mannes College of Music and Queens College in New York City; in 1957 he succeeded Hindemith as chair of the composition department at Yale University, where in 1960 he founded and directed its Electronic Music Studio, one of the first in the United States.

One of the most versatile musicians on the planet, Andre Previn has amassed considerable credentials as a jazz pianist, despite carving out separate lives first as a Hollywood arranger and composer, and then a world-class classical conductor, pianist and composer.

This CD represents the Goodman band at one of its' peak periods with superb arrangements, with BG solos at a relentless pace - try "Scarecrow" or "Airmail Special" for starters.
Mel Powell was a genius, his piano style("The Earl" for example) and arrangements were very advanced for the time, reflected in the style and looseness of the section phrasing which nevertheless remained disciplined.
This is a very different sound from the 1936-39 band of a few years earlier, less jazz-oriented, but a really swinging outfit.
