Eastern Gray Squirrel - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Particularly in urban situations where predation risk is reduced, both albino and melanistic forms of the Eastern Gray Squirrel are quite often found.
At the northern limits of its range in the Canadian provinces of Ontario and Quebec, the melanistic form tends to be more common than the grey form.
There are well established colonies of melanistic (fl) individuals in Victoria Park, London, Ontario, Canada (with a daughter colony at Kent State University, Ohio), Albion, Michigan, Washington, DC,and Princeton, New Jersey.

On the continent as a whole, "melanistic" or "melanic" deer - so named because their bodies produce far too much of the hair, skin and retina pigment known as melanin - are definitely the rarest of the rare.
The eastern edge of Texas' Edwards Plateau region and adjacent areas of the Blackland Prairie region are the epicenter of the world's population of melanistic whitetails, for reasons not well understood even by the two researchers.
Melanistic deer are concentrated along the region's drainages, where cover is thick and a dark-colored prey animal would have an edge in avoiding detection.

Biodiversity in Belize - Black Jaguars in Belize?
One probable reason for this misconception, in addition to the situation with leopards, is the fact that the melanistic phase does not occur throughout a large portion of the jaguar's range, and where it does occur it is usually with a lower frequency than the spotted phase (Nowak, 1991).
The uneven incidence of the melanistic phase of the jaguar in the wild raises some interesting questions, not the least of which is how it came to its present apparent pattern of distribution.
Certainly a tempting hypothesis is that the melanistic form is difficult for prey to see in the darkened rainforest, and this may eventually prove to be the case.

 Panther Mascot
The term Melanistic is derived from the word ‘melanin’, a dark coloured skin and hair pigment.
Melanistic leopards are more commonly found in dense tropical rain forest of S.E Asia - here it is thought that the dark coloration acts as better camouflage in the low sun light conditions of the forest floor, giving the cat an advantage in hunting.
If this is the case, it is also possible that a fl leopard will also be at an advantage in being able to provide more food for its young and as a result the probability of the melanistic gene being transferred through the population will be greater.

It is my observation that the melanistic traits in the higher vertebrates is not due to natural selection as may be proposed or inferred, but rather due to inbreeding.
I would suppose that the melanistic forms would soon disappear in favor of the more camouflaged ground squirrels when the two are interbreeding, as is the case in industrial melanistic moths when exposed to non-industrial, lighter colored backgrounds.
As an example the "King Cheetah" with its partially melanistic coloration could be the result of inbreeding occurring because of reduced populations of the normally spotted cheetah in the immediate locality of the occurrence of the melanistic form.
