		Particularly in urban situations where predation risk is reduced, both albino and melanistic forms of the Eastern Gray Squirrel are quite often found.

		One probable reason for this misconception, in addition to the situation with leopards, is the fact that the melanistic phase does not occur throughout a large portion of the jaguar's range, and where it does occur it is usually with a lower frequency than the spotted phase (Nowak, 1991).
		The uneven incidence of the melanistic phase of the jaguar in the wild raises some interesting questions, not the least of which is how it came to its present apparent pattern of distribution.
		Certainly a tempting hypothesis is that the melanistic form is difficult for prey to see in the darkened rainforest, and this may eventually prove to be the case.

		It is my observation that the melanistic traits in the higher vertebrates is not due to natural selection as may be proposed or inferred, but rather due to inbreeding.
		I would suppose that the melanistic forms would soon disappear in favor of the more camouflaged ground squirrels when the two are interbreeding, as is the case in industrial melanistic moths when exposed to non-industrial, lighter colored backgrounds.
		As an example the "King Cheetah" with its partially melanistic coloration could be the result of inbreeding occurring because of reduced populations of the normally spotted cheetah in the immediate locality of the occurrence of the melanistic form.
