SICB - 2002 meeting - Abstract Details   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-09-17)
Melanophryniscus is a genus of small toads inhabiting the southern portion of South America.
The presence of an elongated processus anterior dorsalis of the suprarostral alae and the absence a chondrified commissura quadratoorbitalis appear to be unique in Melanophryniscus among bufonids.
Internal oral anatomy is conserved in Melanophryniscus and among bufonids in general.

The Ecological Significance of Lipophilic Alkaloids in the Dendrobatidae (Amphibia: Anura)
Species in the Bufonid genus Melanophryniscus have been found to contain pumiliotoxins, allopumiliotoxins, homopumiliotoxins, several izidine compounds, and several decahydroquinolines.
Both Mantella and Melanophryniscus species occupy the same ecological niche types as Dendrobatids.
This trend seems to have occurred separately in four groups of anurans: Dendrobatidae, Mantellinae, Pseudophryne, and Melanophryniscus (Vences et al., 1997/98).

From what I have been able to gather so far, Melanophryniscus Stelzneri, also called the Argentine Flame Bellied Toadlet or Bumblebee Walking Toad is a close relative of the Atolopids, (Harlequin Toads).
They do come from fairly high altitudes, but are less vulnerable to heat and dessication than thier cousins.
