Alligatoridae - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In Central and South America alligators are represented by five species of the genus Caiman, which differs from the alligator by the absence of a bony septum between the nostrils, and the ventral armour is composed of overlapping bony scutes, each of which is formed of two parts united by a suture.
The largest, attaining an enormous bulk and a length of 20 ft., is the near-extinct Melanosuchus niger, the Jacare-assu, Large, or Black Caiman of the Amazon.
The Black Caiman and American Alligator are the only members of the alligator family posing the same danger to humans as the larger species of the crocodile family.

Distribution and abundance of four caiman species (Crocodilia: Alligatoridae) in Jaú National Park, Amazonas, ...   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-08)
Studies discovered that Melanosuchus is absent from many areas of historic distribution, and this had been related to commercial hunting (Medem 1971, 1981, 1983, Brazaitis et al.
Currently in Amazonia, increased the pressure of hunting, habitat loss and habitat alteration, and there is no evidences of widespread recovery of caiman populations.  Our data shows that in large reserves without many disturbance, most caiman populations can be low density, suggesting that in flwater environments their recovery from exploitation should be very slow.
