The first trams, known as streetcars in north America, or horsecars, that were built in the United States, and developed from city stagecoach lines and omnibus lines that picked up and dropped off passengers on a regular route and without the need to be pre-hired.
Modern trams generally use overhead electric cables, from which they draw current through a pantograph, a bow collector (less commonly) or the now-rare trolley pole (the former is most common and used on most new tram designs).
In Melbourne, in addition to newer types of trams in use such as the Citadis and the Combino and the middle-aged A, B and Z class trams, older W-class trams (of the dropcentre design referred to above) remain in service and are a popular tourist attraction.
Trams travel in both directions with a frequency of approximately 10 minutes.
However, newer trams have been known to operate on the City Circle when no older trams are available, and green liveried W-class trams fitted with Metcard vending machines and validators have also run on the City Circle when no brown and gold liveried trams are available.
The route of the City Circle trams roughly follows the outer edges of the Hoddle Grid, with only two diversions.

This is not necessary at many of the tram stops in the city centre which have a barrier called a Safety Zone or when you are travelling in the opposite direction to the tram.
Melbourne'stramroute 55 starts at the Domain Rd Interchange, which was constructed as a Federal Government Bicentennial Project in 1988 to keep route 55 trams clear of St Kilda Rd services while shunting.

Situated on Richmond Hill in Church Street, the church is just five minutes from the Melbourne Central Business District (CBD) and is one of the earliest and most beautiful churches in the country.

I'm also thinking maybe driving from Canberra to Melbourne for the last week of the trip so we can wander through the countryside, which is pretty much how we like to travel here in Scotland except it will be brown instead of green.
Just before you get to melbourne you could stay a night at Walhalla, the only town that still has no electricity and where the hills are so steep the coffins in the local cemetry have to be buried on their heads.
Melbourne Bars: Due to dropping the cost of a liquor licence to next to nothing melbourne city and inner city has the most amazing bars, many strange places.
Our flight was uneventful, except for the fact that almost all of the cabin crew were men, and that we took a 767 for a 70-minute flight-- on a US airline, we'd have been squeezed into an MD-80 or 737.
Upon arriving in Melbourne, we found that the weather was much cooler-- around 50°F, with a stiff breeze.
The tram ride itself was about what you'd expect-- fairly slow, a little bumpy, with lots of fellow travelers.
