  Vincent's NT Word Studies - Hebrews 7
Melchisedec is not shown to be an eternal high priest because his death-record is lost; nor to be properly likened unto the Son of God because there is no notice of his birth and parentage.
Melchisedec, who has no part in the Levitical genealogy, and therefore no legal right to exact tithes, took tithes from the patriarch himself.
Melchisedec accepted the position accorded to him by Abraham's gift of tithes by bestowing on Abraham his blessing, and Abraham recognized his superiority by accepting his blessing.

Melchisedec was, in his priesthood, "made like" Christ, as far as the imperfect type could represent the lineaments of the perfect archetype.
Melchisedec was the highest and last representative of the Noahic covenant, as Christ was the highest and ever enduring representative of the Abrahamic.
THOLUCK remarks, "Melchisedec remains in so far as the type remains in the antitype, in so far as his priesthood remains in Christ." The father and mother of Melchisedec, as also his children, are not descended from Levi, as the Levitical priests (Hebrews 7:6) were required to be, and are not even mentioned by Moses.

Who was Melchizedek? - Two Views
Since they were descendants of Abraham and recipients of the oracles of God in which Melchisedec is mentioned, they had the tradition of their fathers' teaching concerning him passed down from generation to generation, and thus had a better chance of understanding his identity than we, with our western mentality, 2000 years later do.
Melchisedec was a priest of the Most High God all his earthly life, and Jesus is a priest of the Most High God all His eternal life.
Melchisedec seems to be an ordinary man who served as a priest and king over Salem for the duration of his life.

The principle that the blesser is superior to him whom he blesses, holds good only in a blessing given with divine authority; not merely a prayerful wish, but one that is divinely efficient in working its purport, as that of the patriarchs on their children: so Christ's blessing, Luk 24:51 Act 3:26.
Melchisedec's death not being recorded, is expressed by the positive term "liveth," for the sake of bringing into prominence the antitype, Christ, of whom alone it is strictly and perfectly true, "that He liveth."

Melchisedec did not come to Abraham to receive tithes from him, but to minister to him the bread and wine.
Although Melchisedec was a king, he did not come as a king but as the priest of the Most High God, coming to Abraham with bread and wine.
Melchisedec's coming to minister the bread and wine to Abraham, the father of the called race, signified Christ's coming to minister Himself as the processed God into us.

1, 2 Melchisedec was both King and a High Priest to whom Abraham gave a tenth of the spoils gained in warfare.
Melchisedec was greater than Abraham, because the latter gave 'spoils' (verses 2-10) to the former, who also blessed Abraham (verses 1, 6) thereby confirming the former's superiority.

The "order" cannot mean a series of priests, for Melchisedec neither received his priesthood from, nor transmitted it to, any other mere man; it must mean "answering to the office of Melchisedec." Christ's priesthood is similar to Melchisedec's in that it is "for ever" (Heb 7:16, 17).

 After the Order of Melchisedec
Melchisedec was both a king and a priest, and from God’s standpoint a very highly honored priest.
Salem means ‘peace,’ so Melchisedec was ‘King of peace.’ What a clearly defined type Melchisedec was, therefore, of the one concerning whom the Prophet Isaiah wrote that “of the increase of his government and peace there shall be no end.”—Isa.
The evident thought of this text is that Melchisedec was without father or mother in the priesthood—he did not inherit the office from his parents.

Presidency and Priesthood by William H. Kelley
From the evidences cited it will scarcely be questioned that the Melchisedec and Aaronic priesthoods, one or both, were recognized authorities by which the people of God rendered an acceptable service during the times of the patriarchs, the law, and the prophets, although at times known by other appellations.
Hence it is direct proof that the Melchisedec priesthood is a necessary authority in preaching and administering the gospel system; for Christ did not administer the "rites and ceremonies" of the law, but came "preaching the gospel of the kingdom of God." (Mark i.
He was a high priest after the order of Melchisedec, as has been shown, and it is logical to conclude that he ordained the twelve apostles to offices in that priesthood which he held, as they were to preach and administer the same gospel.

Now, up comes the patron saint of the Masons and Mormons, good old "Melchisedec," who is as hard to locate as a whisper in a hurricane unless you pretend that half of what you are about to read doesn't actually mean what it says.
Melchisedec could be left as he stands, just some unknown character that pops up out of nowhere and vanishes, but considering the fact that the author devotes twenty verses to him and less than ten to David and less than five to Abel, we should look for more than an anonymous pagan priest.
And it is yet far more evident: for that after the similtude of Melchisedec there ariseth another priest, Who is made, not after the law of a carnal commandment, but after the power of an endless life.

 The Order of Melchisedec
Melchisedec was "without father, without mother, and without descent; having neither beginning of days, nor end of life." He was the eternal God and Father of Jesus the Son Who had both Father and (as is supposed) mother; a time He began, and a time He died and rose again.
When Melchisedec met Abraham returning from the slaughter of the kings, and before the destruction of Sodom, He was a created Man. But as God is Adam's only Savior and Redeemer and His own Law stipulated that only a near kinsman could qualify, He had to be born of a woman.
The allusion to Melchisedec in verse 4 carries our view beyond the Aaronic and Levitical priesthoods, back beyond the history of Israel itself to the days of Abraham, and God's unconditional promise in which the Christian Church of the firstborn are joint-heirs with Christ.

The Hebrew believers were to understand that the priesthood of Christ was better than the system they were tempted to return to and that, even though a long time had passed, He was still busy working for their salvation in the temple in heaven.
