Melchizedek appeared in Genesis to the patriarch Abraham.
In turn, Abraham gave Melchizedek as priest a tithe of ten percent of the bounty that he took in battle.
According to LDS tradition, Melchizedek's blessing of Abraham at Salem is a priesthood authority whose keys were restored to Joseph Smith along with the keys of Aaron's priesthood.

Priesthood is the channel for obtaining revelation, the channel through which God reveals himself and his glory, his intents and his purposes, to mankind: The priesthood holds "the key of the mysteries of the kingdom, even the key of the knowledge of God" (D&C 84:19–20; cf.
322–23; HC 5:554–55)—the Melchizedek, the Patriarchal, and the Aaronic:
Ordination to each different priesthood office is by the authority and under the direction of the presiding priesthood officer in the ward, branch, stake, or mission of the Church where the person resides, by the laying on of hands by one holding appropriate priesthood office and designated to so act.

Melchizedek's status was one of a priest and a king.
First, the inferiority of the Levitical priesthood partly lay in the fact that mortal men assumed the priestly functions, whereas the superiority of Melchizedek's priesthood partly lay in that fact that He Himself is immortal; and because Melchizedek is immortal, His priesthood must be eternal.
Aaron's priesthood, and the practices of the tabernacle and temple, set the stage, and prepared for, the revelation of Christ's priesthood, which is the extension and realization of Melchizedek's priesthood.

David by the Holy Spirit is clearly associating Yahweh Elohim with the priesthood of Melchizedek (not the Aaronite priesthood) and revealing that it was without end.
This showed that the former priesthood was of a higher order than the latter, which was a temporary priesthood and shadow of the Melchizedek priesthood.
This priesthood was thought of as a higher order than the Aaronite priesthood that officiated in the tabernacle and the temples because Melchizedek was equated with the priesthood of Elohim.

 The Melchizedek Priesthood
According to Hebrew tradition and the Apocrypha, Melchizedek, king and founder of Ur Salem (Jerusalem), was Noah's son Shem.
As far as we know, Melchizedek was the only priest at that time so if he was chosen as a high priest, it would be over the priesthood in generations to come.
The purpose of the old order of priesthood was to teach the people that atonement for sins requires the provision of an innocent victim in the sinners place and the shedding of blood as the victim dies the death due to the sinner.

Melchizedek continued to be a mystery even in the NT period.
Melchizedek is not found on the register of the only line of legitimate priests ; no record of his name is there; his fathers name is not recorded, nor his mother’s; no evidence points to his line of descent from Aaron.
Because the Levitical priesthood is connected to the law of Moses which was temporary (Heb.8:6,13) to do away with Moses law also meant to do away with the Levitical priesthood that practiced the sacrifices.

The Melchizedek Priesthood holds the right of presidency, and has power and authority over all the offices in the Church, in all ages of the world, to administer in spiritual things.
The second Priesthood is called the Priesthood of Aaron, because it was conferred upon Aaron and his seed, throughout all their generations.
The power and authority of the lesser, or Aaronic Priesthood, is to hold the keys of the ministering of angels, and to administer in outward ordinances—the letter of the gospel—the baptism of repentance for the remission of sins, agreeably to the covenants and commandments.”

Hence, the lesser priesthood was called the Aaronic Priesthood, after Aaron, but a portion of that priesthood was also called the levitical priesthood because all those to whom it was given belonged to the tribe of Levi.
Beginning with the reorganization of the priesthood in 1877, the Church established the current practice of ordaining boys to the Aaronic Priesthood during their early teenage years, organizing them at the ward level into priesthood quorums by age group and priesthood office, and advancing them periodically to higher offices and eventually to the higher priesthood.
Over the Aaronic Priesthood, the "president is to be a bishop; for this is one of the duties of this priesthood" (D&C 107:88), but bishops are also ordained high priests of the Melchizedek Priesthood because they preside and are not literal descendants of Aaron.

Is the priesthood of Aaron a symbol of Christ’s priesthood?
Although Melchizedek is mentioned only twice in the Old Testament (OT), the Epistle to the Hebrews, which mentions him in a number of chapters, made of this early portrayal in the OT a basis for the most important teachings of Christianity on the Salvation offered by Christ and on His ministry as a Priest.
It is therefore wrong to apply the ritual teachings of the OT to the NT since we are dealing with a new priesthood (enacted) according to Melchizedek, a new law and a new covenant (7:12; 8:6).

Paul was using the figure of Melchizedek to compare the Levitical priesthood to that of Christ.
No matter how one interprets the identity of Melchizedek, one can conclude that, as a minimum, the "Order of Melchizedek" takes on the meaning of a priestly function as it was originally intended at the Creation, and not as it was restricted and limited to the Levites at the time of Moses.
If the priesthood changed from the Levitical priesthood to the Melchizedek priesthood in the First Century, "of necessity there is also a change of the Law" (v.12).

Melchizedek was a real person, a human being who was a "priest of the Most High God" on the basis of the patriarchal priesthood that obtained before the establishment of the Levitical priest after the Exodus (see the link: "Gentile Patriarchy" from part 5 of the Satanic Rebellion series).
Hebrews 7:1-3 and the issue of the comparison of Melchizedek to Christ are often debated, as you are probably aware.
This is the ultimate point of superiority to which the priesthood of Melchizedek points, namely, other priesthoods were only symbolic (as well as temporary and hereditary), but our Lord’s is the one true mediation between God and man in the Person of and through the work of the God-Man Jesus Christ.

Melchizedek is Hebrew for "King of Righteousness." This priest of which we know so little met Abraham upon his victorious return from the slaughter of the kings, brought forth bread and wine, invoking a blessing upon first Abraham and then God.
There is a fascinating blend here between the Levitical priesthood and the day of atonement services associated with it, and the Melchizedek priesthood and its superiority over the Levitical.
The claim of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints today is, that after a universal apostasy of the church on earth God removed the priesthood from the earth including its authority (For a consideration of this claim, see Two Candidates for the End-time Church).

That there was a distinct administration of angels in the restoration of the Melchizedek Priesthood is sustained by the testimony of Oliver Cowdery.

Since the Book of Genesis does not mention his father, or his mother, or his children, or his birth or death, Jewish argument is allowed to speculate that he did not have a Father or Mother etc. This is an argument by analogy and allusion.
The "order of Melchizedek" means "of the same type as Melchizedek" - according to this Jewish method of argument.
A better English translation would be "after the disposition of Melchizedek" or "after the arrangement of Melchizedek." In other words, whatever things (real or imagined) made Melchizedek a priest, the same things make Jesus a priest.
