Meldrick Taylor - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Meldrick Taylor (born October 19, 1966 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania) is a former Olympic gold medalist and world boxing champion in two weight classes.
Taylor, one of many boxing champions hailing from the city of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, learned his craft in the gyms of his hometown and posted a 99-4 record as an amateur fighter.
Taylor is the brother of fellow former boxer Myron Taylor.

Thunder Meets Lightning - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Taylor's rise through the professional ranks was also quick, as his speed and reflexes proved to be nearly impossible to counter, and while not known as a prodigious puncher, his strength was to be respected and earned him 14 KOs in his 25 victories prior to the Chavez bout.
However, in a strange scene between rounds, Taylor's trainer Lou Duva told him that he needed to win the final round, and as a result Taylor did not stay away, but continued to trade with Chavez, even though he was so exhausted and battered that he was staggering around the ring.
Taylor seemed to be drawing on some reservoir of courage and pure will to carry him through the round, but his strength was rapidly leaving him, as evidenced by the way he fell to the canvas after missing Chavez with a wild left.

The fight with Taylor was an obvious choice because it received the fight of the year award in 1990 and Chavez also got the fighter of the year award on the strength of this performance.
Taylor had beaten Chavez strategically and physically but not mentally, nobody could do ever do that to this amazingly resilient man. Chavez' 66 fights looked to have taken their toll, it looked like his number was up and then with just two seconds left on the clock.
Taylor had almost every advantage, he was a bigger, stronger, faster and younger man. He fought the fight of his life on a night when Chavez was not showing his best stuff but unfortunately for Taylor just wouldn't allow himself to be beaten.

Sportscolumn.com - Sports News - Timeless: Chavez Vs. Taylor
While Meldrick Taylor indeed had the lifeblood of "A City of Brotherly Love" careening violently through his veins, it was his equal measure of talent that defined his climb toward glory.
It was in his determination that Taylor had taken far too much punishment, and if he, after being knocked down, could not properly affix a definite equilibrium, the match would end in a technical knockout in favor of the resurgent Chavez.
It's important to note that Taylor was not thoroughly pounded without recourse at any point of the fight, rather, rounds eight, nine, and ten, were all contested evenly, however, it was the effect of Chavez's blows on Taylor that caused such disparity in how the fight was judged and how it was actually fought.
