Families Megapodidae Numididae Odontophoridae Phasianidae Meleagrididae Tetraonidae Cracidae Mesitornithidae The Galliformes is an order of birds containing the turkeys, grouse, quails and pheasants.
George Robert Gray (July 8, 1808 - May 6, 1872) was an English zoologist and author and head of the ornithological section of the British Museum in London for forty-one years.
With their wingspans of 1.5-1.8 metres, the turkeys are by far the largest birds in the open forests in which they live, and are rarely mistaken for any other species.

Date : 9/9/2006 Time : 3:50:40 PM The turkey is a large game bird native to North American forested areas and now raised commercially for food in most parts of the world.
Two species--the wild turkey, Meleagris gallopavo, of the eastern and central United States and Mexico, and the ocellated turkey, Agriocharis ocellata, of Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula and adjacent areas--make up the family Meleagrididae, which is classified with pheasants in the order Galliformes.
An adult male wild turkey is about 1.2 m (4 ft) long and has metallic greenish, bronze, or brownish plumage, broad rounded wings and tail, and long, slim, spurred legs.

RHEGMINORNIS RESTUDIED: A TINY MIOCENE TURKEY
Rhegminornis differs from the Phasianidae (sensu stricto) and agrees with the Meleagrididae in the more elevated internal trochlea, larger and more elongate distal foramen, and the presence of a distinct, although small, inner intertrochlear foramen.
In the tarsometatarsi of Rhegminornis and the Meleagrididae, in side view, the middle trochlea curves anteriorly past the line of the shaft whereas in the other Galliformes, including the Phasianidae and the Numididae, the middle trochlea is more nearly in line with the shaft.
The presence of a small but unmistakable turkey as early as the Lower Miocene suggests that the Meleagrididae have had a long history in North America and may well have undergone considerable radiation during the Tertiary.

A NEW TURKEY FROM THE PLIOCENE OF NEBRASKA
Proagriocharis differs from the other genera of turkeys in the shape of the coraco-humeral ligamental attachment which is elongate and lacks a distinct border on the outer side of the neck (triangular and having a distinct border on the outer side of the bone in the other Meleagrididae (Howard, 1927:6)).
Type species.--Proagriocharis kimballensis Martin and Tate Diagnosis.--Agrees with the Meleagrididae in having the median surface of the head on the coracold flattened (also flattened in the Cracidae, but it is notched in the Tetraonidae and Phasianidae); brachial tuberosity lacking overhang (present in Tetraonidae and Phasianidae), and the scapular facet concave.
Proagriocharis differs from other genera of turkeys in having the follow- ing combination of characters: Coracoid resembling Parapavo and differing from Meleagris and Agriocharis in that the scapular facet is nearly rounded rather than elongate; the procoracoid is blunted, and the shape of the head is oval with indistinct mid-ventral notch.
