According to Kesolei, Melekeok residents gave their opinions about the pending measure on the 99-year lease for government public lands and 50-year lease for private lands.

In the 1980’s, Melekeok lobbied to become the capital of the Republic with then Governor Thomas Tellei and state legislature speaker Andrei Demei envisioned a model of their plan for a 250-million dollar city with a capitol, hotels, hospital, schools, airport and roads.
The resolution stated that the Olbiil Era Kelulau (Palau’s National Congress) is cognizant of the trmendous contribution made by the State Government of Melekeok, High Chief Reklai, the leadership of Melekeok State and the people for bestowing 94,000 square meters of premiere property to house the new national capital building.
It was the fifth straight win for Melekeok, which had to wait for the winner of the Koror-Ngeremlengui match for their finals opponent.

The leadership of Melekeok established the Ngardok Nature Reserve to protect the watershed from degradation, because the integrity of the forests are critical to preserving the water quality in the lake.
As long as the forest in the watershed is healthy, the watershed will provide clean and plentiful water to the villages of Melekeok and Ngchesar.
Recent activities in the reserve are: construction of a nature trail, installation of interpretive signs, and installation of a floating viewing platform on the lake.

Through their own initiative, the state governments of Melekeok, Ngiwal, Ngaremiengui and Ngarchelong constructed a combined total of 13.9 miles of asphalt concrete paved roads within their respective states from 1985 to 1988.
The length of these roads and the respective states within which the roads were built are as follows: Melekeok- 2.5 miles; Ngiwal- 3.4 miles; Ngaremiengui- 3.0 miles; Ngarchelong- 5.0 miles of which approximately a 3-mile segment is surfaced only with crushed stones.
Past docking facility developments in the states of Ngarchelong, Melekeok, Ngatpang and Angaur mainly for enhancing small scale fishery operations were made possible through grant aid assistance from the Government of Japan.

Palau’s 12th Independence Anniversary celebrations saw the relocation of the national capital from Koror to the state of Melekeok on Sunday October 1.
The relocation of the capital was mandated by Article 13, Section 11 of the Palau Constitution, stating that a location in Babeldaob, designated by the Olbiil Era Kelulau would become the nation’s permanent capital.
Melekeok was then designated as the new capital by members of the 1st Olbiil Era Kelulau.

I had the pleasure of a 10 day vacation last month and surfed some of the best waves ever in Melekeok.
Melekeok is a 30 min drive from Koror and a 5 min.
