Thus MELINDA AND MELINDA gets off to a bad start, ignoring the obvious, that life can be both comic and tragic, often at the same time.
Even the characters of the Melindas are given totally separate identities and totally different personalities.
As is, MELINDA AND MELINDA is an experiment without a purpose, preordained to prove nothing.

The title, Melinda & Melinda, comes from two variations of the story that the three intellectuals in the restaurant think up; they change her character at one point, and we are supposed to see two sides of her.
Melinda & Melinda is a fabricated story from these minds: they claim to know all the answers in what makes a great story (the combination of comedy and tragedy and how tragedy can even be humorous), and what they come up with is awfully boring.

Melinda and Melinda is good enough to rank alongside his classic films such as Annie Hall and Hannah And Her Sisters.
She expects him to be angry, but he was intending to announce his love for Melinda and he is instead blissfully happy, waving his arms around because he can't find the words to express himself.

‘Melinda and Melinda’ is an entertaining movie with a good premise that just doesn’t live up to its potential.
In many ways this gives Allen the freedom to be as creative as he pleases, and although many of his films seem to take on similar themes, Melinda and Melinda takes a unique approach to essentially the same story we have seen before.
Although this certainly remains true with Melinda and Melinda, it isn’t nearly as noticeable with the comfortable way Ferrell adapts to the role.

Chloe Sevigny and Radha Mitchell in Melinda and Melinda
The film is less interested in Melinda's response to the forgettable dentist than in Hobie's response, namely, his very verbal jealousy (he and Susan are along for the beach trip).
Both relationships lead to more of Melinda's heartache, to varying degrees, though again, the emotional focus in each case is less her turmoil than the occasion this turmoil provides for others to react and act out.

SPLICEDwire | "Melinda and Melinda" movie review (2005) "Melinda & Melinda" review, Woody Allen, Radha Mitchell, Will ...
Woody Allen hit upon a plucky, imaginative concept for "Melinda and Melinda": The same story, of a woman at loose ends, imagined as both comedy and tragedy by two playwrights (Wallace Shawn and Larry Pine) arguing in a Manhattan cafe whether life is inherently funny or inherently sad.
In both stories Melinda's friends try to help her put her life back together, with some ups and downs, and varying degrees of devotion and success -- all the makings of great laughs, serious soul-searching and other cross-pollinating thematic elements.
She maintains a nugget of sorrow in silly Melinda's improving disposition (she's a fine comedienne) and a modicum of humor in unhinged Melinda's self-destructive volatility (she delivers more than one moving yet mordant monologue of anguished self-examination).

“Melinda and Melinda” has many elements that have been familiar in his work since the early 70’s, but what was brilliant in a different time is now stale and obnoxious.

No, utterly unfunny, "Melinda and Melinda" was simply written for his little clique, and Woody Allen is content to fill our screens with the most annoying of yapping Yankies spouting endless, unintelligible high-brow tosh on crummy sets shot with lacklustre camera angles.
Clearly in Allen's mind, showing him to be cultured must have seemed essential in case his intended audience of Manhattan's white artsy elite would expect Ellis to start swinging through the trees and stuffing his face full of bananas.

To state that Allen’s latest, Melinda and Melinda, represents something of a return to form for Allen is to bring both good news and not-so-good news.
Writer-director Allen keeps things moving quite adeptly, and as both Melindas, Mitchell is so spectacular that she’s able to completely transcend the fact that the character as written is merely another slight variation of the psycho-beauty Allen’s been trotting out for show since Stardust Memories.
That’s part of the bad news—return to form is as return to form does, and it’s hardly a surprise that these characters appear to be living in New York circa 1986 (when Allen made Hannah and Her Sisters, his last metropolitan foray that seemed true to its time).
