History of Samos   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-01)
Samos reached its pinnacle during the period it was governed by the tyrant Polycrates (546 - 522 BC).
Samos which constituted the bridge between Greece and East, managed for many years, because of its power, to remain independent, while at the same time flourishing, despite the battles that were waged to conquer it.
The modern culture of Samos impressed on the traditional built-up areas, the extraordinary churches, most of which were build during the 18th and 19th century, the 16th century monasteries, the impressive neoclassical buildings, the tanneries at Karlovasi, tobacco factories and wine-stores that also indicate the main activities of its inhabitants.

 CATHOLIC ENCYCLOPEDIA: Melissus of Samos
at Samos about 470 B.C. It is probable that he was a disciple of Parmenides, and that he is identical with the Melissus who, according to Plutarch (Pericles, 26), commanded the Samian fleet which defeated the Athenians off the coast of Samos in 442.
The physical doctrines ascribed to Melissus by Philoponus, Stoboeus, Epiphanius, and others do not seem to have been held by him.
Like Plato, Aristotle, and some of the other Greek philosopher, he probably thought it wisest to take refuge in a profession of ignorance regarding the gods, so as to avoid the imputation of hostility to the popular mythology.

Melissus of Samos was the last of the famous Eleatics, writing around 440 B.C. He argued for Parmenides' claims in his own original way, drawing on the distinction between "is" and "seems" and the metaphysical consequences of the former.
If something "is" X, he claimed, then it must be X essentially, and so it can never not be X. So, for instance, if something is hot, and does not just seem hot, then it can never stop being hot.

Even though he was an Ionian, he adopted the philosophy of Parmenides, introducing an important change.
For Melissus, what is, the One Being, is an unlimited Whole, because if it was not, it would not be One, but three things: The One Being, the limit and the limiting.
In the same way, from the fact that the Being is unlimited we deduce its eternity, because it cannot have beginning or end.
