The most common reference to a mellophone is the obese trumpet-looking thing in the key of the F that does use the trumpet fingerings.
i think mellophone is alot easier than french horn, but i was a trumpet player first, so that could just be me. i would say just learn the fingerings and give it a try, it might be easier than you think.

The Tenor Horn and the Mellophone are close cousins in that they share a common bore, length and mouthpiece size (though the Tenor Horn is a Saxhorn and the Mellophone is not).
Also, since pit bands are normally a hodgepodge of whoever you can get, sometimes you need the brassiness of the Mellophone to fill in the timbre of missing brass.
Granted, there are no musical organizations that actively use Mellophones, but it hardly invalidates it as a musical instrument.
