Mellow Yellow is actually more diverse in its sounds than Sunshine Superman, drawing on some of the same era's better follow-up material but also reaching back somewhat further for repertory.
It was, as one could rightly guess, a by-product of the late-1966 hit title track, but the songs dated back in some instances as much as a year, to a point prior to Donovan's having made the leap from folk to pop artist.
"Mellow Yellow" itself was cut after "Sunshine Superman" and boasted one of the earliest arrangements by John Paul Jones to achieve international recognition (although not without some resistance from Donovan himself), with its broad, biting brass sound.

Parsons later remixed the album for CD re-release, but showed very good taste by limiting this process to a couple of added solos and synthesizer textures, which fit seamlessly in with the original recordings, and the restoration of Orson Welles' Poe recitations, recorded during the album sessions but omitted from the original mix.
The album's songs deal with various aspects of women, but mainly in terms of male stereotypes and pop cliches, either as idealised objects of desire or unfaithful tormentresses of the fragile male ego.
The album is redolent of lack of inspiration, as there are no less than three instrumentals of increasing insipidity filling the spaces between generic rockers ("In the Real World") and humdrum ballads ("Light of the World").

Next came 'Mellow Yellow', in a similar musical style and lyrical vein — Most thought it was about smoking banana skins (which supposedly had mind-expanding qualities, a notion which has little, if any, basis in fact) until he was informed that the "electric banana" mentioned in the song's lyrics referred to a vibrator!
Pleased that the double album was being released on CD for the first time (on a maximum length single disc), he recalled in a May, 1993, phone conversation some of the background to this album, which he made a quarter of a century ago: "I'm happy that it's being re-issued on CD.

Don's debut album is the one that gave him the "Dylan clone" tag, but that's not a completely fair conclusion once you immerse yourself in the simple pleasures of this great album from 1966.
The album was the final chapter of his psychedelic phase and the title track (originally written for his friend Mac Macleod's band Hurdy Gurdy see elsewhere) is suitably cosmic in an almost Hendrix like acid rock style.
Ignoring the 1967 UK album with the same title (essentially a compilation with different artwork) this 1966 classic from Donovan was only released in the USA where his new, druggy direction was more in tune with the times.

A concept album of sorts, Mellow Gold narrated the backdrop of Los Angeles as seen from the bottom of the dustbin, framed with the impoverished strains of fractured, missing-stringed folk and ramshackle white-boy hip-hop.
Mellow Gold was Beck’s breakthrough album, and although less famous than the follow-up ‘Odelay’ (a true groundbreaking album), it was the album that had contained a song that defined a generation.
From the opening slide guitar riff that was born through an hour of jamming on his guitar with a friend recording, followed by the hip-hop drum beat that the said friend later added, the instant appeal of ‘Loser’ is still relevant today.
