Melnik was under the government of Bulgarians, Byzantines and Serbians until 1395 when the town was conquered by the Ottomans.

And your story totally convinced me that it is a country worth visiting for the birds it has and for the nature to be seen.
Bulgaria certainly has some great birding sites and if you do happen to pass by- definitely spend some time along the Black Sea coast / some parts of the Danube river / Eastern Rhodope Mountains and down the Struma valley (that's where Melnik roughly is).
