  Melnorme - Ultronomicon
The similarity in name between "Melnorme" and "Mael-Num", combined with the fact that the Mael-Num are being described as one-eyed creatures, may lead one to suspect there is a connection between the two.
And indeed, Paul Reiche III and Fred Ford have confirmed that the Mael-Num are ancestors of the Melnorme.
The Melnorme's Trader ship, while not designed as a warship, is still capable of defending itself, possessing a weapon system bought from the Keel-Verezy just one month before their first meeting with The Captain.

 Melnorme
The Melnorme are a fictional race of beings featured in the second installment of the sci-fi Star Control computer game series.
The Melnorme are highly secretive of themselves and their origins, and while they are technically ready to divulge such information, the prices are ludicrous.
The race itself is not talking, but their similarities have led many to believe that the Melnorme are the descendants of the Mael-Num, a race formerly part of the Sentient Milieu that disappeared, believed extinct, after the arrival of the Dnyarri.

 Melnorme
The Melnorme have a strict moral code that they do not deviate from and do not appear to be effected at all by any race at all (well the Ur-Quan allegidly made them flee from there homeworld a few thousand years ago, but aside from that).
And all the contact with them is done through ships, so probably many Melnorme spend their lives in a ship servicing their race for biological specimens and locations to rainbow worlds, however that is all that they have asked us for, they could want other things from other people.
The Melnorme seems to like everyone, even if they have not given them anything in return, so it can be rest assured that emotion exchanges (if the Melnorme have them), would be free and only material things and knowledge need to be bought and sold.

On top of that, if you fill your tanks partially, and then fill them to the top, the Melnorme won't charge you.

Though we Melnorme have just recently arrived in this region of space we have long desired to make contact with your species and look forward to an extended profitable relationship.
We Melnorme are interstellar purveyors of fine trade goods and valuable information.
Because it's against the law, and besides if you steal from us, the other Melnorme ships will have to raise their prices and other innocent space aliens will have to pay for your wrong-doing.

This secret can be learned by purchasing information on alien races from the Melnorme or eventually the Mycons will tell you at their homeworld.
Once you tell her the truth of what happened to her original homeworld Syra, she will give you the Syreen Shuttle, which is to be used to free the Syreen Penetrators trapped in the Syreen Vault.
However, if you are stuck in HyperSpace without any fuel and you have no credits, the Melnorme will trade you the amount of fuel you need to return to Sol for some of your modules.

The melnorme are a race of strange one eyed aliens who's origins and motives are extremely mysterious.
They appear where they know their info and items are going to be the most useful, so they never appear when you don't need anything.
To trade with the Melnorme, you simply need to offer them information, items, or their favorite: Biological data on new species..

I am currently in the process of completing the game without Melnorme information and I will be sure to post if it works.
But I think the things the Melnorme tell you about are uneffected by the fact that they you it.

Melnorme is one of my favorite tunes from Star Control 2.
Recent discovery: when listening with headphones, the stereo effects are disconcerting and sometimes dizzying -- especially in the opening seconds where the beat is focused in the left track, and later on when things bounce back and forth rapidly.
The Melnorme grins, looks right at the camera and shyly tells us the great secret of the Melnorme's happiness and success.

The standard measurement of time for the Slylandro is the Drahn, which is equal to 4 million rotations of the planet, or about 6460 earth years.
Since they cannot create tools, much less spaceships, they purchased a model 2418-B self-replicating probe from the Melnorme using data about their own unique biology to pay for it.
Their intent was to use the probe to peacefully explore the universe.

The Melnorme special weapon is a confusion ray which nullifies an enemy's special weapon, and makes them permenantly turning in one direction.
Though the Melnorme is faster than fighters, by an infintesmal margin, it does not have the best acceleration, leaving it very vulnerable to fighters launched from both sides of the screen.

If you want to deal with the Melnorme, you must bring them data: biological information about non-sentient creatures or the locations of special planets.
Slylandro are very curious about the rest of the galaxy, being unable to leave their own planet, and sent out a self-replicating exploratory probe to gather information and bring it back to their planet, Source.
The Slylandro bought one in exchange for allowing the Melnorme to study them; their intent was to program it to replicate, explore, and communicate.

The world that the developers created is populated by aliens with incredibly distinct personalities (both in their ship design and conversation).
The weight of history is constantly pressing down on you, either as constant veiled references to past events from the discussions you have with every race (and they all have a different interpretation to put on every event) or the dry, textbook-style histories you can buy from the Melnorme traders.
In many cases, you can draw conclusions from the discussions you have with races, and visit the blasted worlds they speak of (even if it isn't essential to the plot).

Gene Expression: Survival of the palest....
Lethal stereotypes: Hair and eye color as survival characteristics during the Holocaust asserts a new study excerpted over at Dienekes' blog.
However, I believe hair and eye blondism in Ashkenazic Jews are mostly the result of a large dosage of German mtDNA, coupled with strong founder effects in a very small initial population.
This may be because all Europeans have Middle Eastern ancestry to a certain extent.
