Melody - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Melodies may also be described by their melodic motion or the pitches or the intervals between pitches (predominately conjuct or disjunct or with further restrictions), pitch range, tension and release, continuity and coherence, cadence, and shape (ibid, p.290-301).
Rock music, melodic music, and other forms of popular music and folk music tend to pick one or two melodies (verse and chorus) and stick with them; much variety may occur in the phrasing and lyrics.
Often melodies are constructed from motifs or short melodic fragments, such as the opening of Beethoven's Ninth.

Rough Edge: Melodic Meltdown CD Reviews
Michael's latest project is in the form of a band, Melodic Meltdown, and their new CD proves once again why Michael Søbygge is one of the premier metal guitarists in today's heavy music scene.
But surprisingly enough, while the six-string talent of Sobygge shines through at all times, Melodic Meltdown is a band that has written some taut hard rock songs that don't forget that the song is king and technical flashes, while they have their place, are usually best left to brief and complementary flourishes.
Melodic Meltdown are likely to have their greatest success in Europe and South America where this style still sells records.

 internalizing melodic colors
When soloing, strong improvisers will substitute this color into their chordal and melodic ideas, whether written or not, to create a greater sense of energy and forward motion in their lines.
A second approach for these melodic minor substitutions is to resolve each of the potential resolutions of the above concept to the four keys as done with the diminished group.
When employing the major scale to create melodic lines, these lines are said to be diatonically or modally generated.

Melodic Today is the third compilation album in the same amount of years to come from one of the most exciting and innovative labels in the UK today.
Melodic's roster includes the likes of Pedro, L Pierre, Baikonour, Topo Gigio and Wren as well as a few other aces up it's sleeve (including the debut single by this year's brand new indie darlings, the Nine Black Alps which came out last year).
Where, in the past, Melodic has given us some of the most beautiful instrumental music around, the label's roster is widening in breadth and also vocal talent which ends up with a compilation more eclectic than ever and a 50-50 split of vocal and instrumental pieces.

Marc Sabatella's Jazz Improvisation Primer: Melodic Minor Harmony
In A melodic minor, a lydian augmented scale is built on C and consists of "C, D, E, F#, G#, A, B".
In A melodic minor, a lydian dominant scale is built on D and consists of "D, E, F#, G#, A, B, C".
The seventh mode of the melodic minor scale is often called the diminished whole tone scale, because it combines elements of the diminished and whole tone scales discussed later.

 The Melodic Scales
The melodic scale above has two triads which are capable of functioning as tonics: c minor and G major, so these are the tonics of the two tonally effective modes of the melodic scale - the (ascending) melodic minor scale and the (descending) melodic major scale.
Both of these scales can be understood to be melodic "improvements" of the harmonic minor and harmonic major scales respectively, although the strength of the tonic in both these melodic scales is weaker than in their harmonic counterparts.
In the melodic minor scale the 6th and 7th degrees of the diatonic aeolian mode are sharpened, in the melodic major scale the 6th and 7th degrees of the diatonic major scale are flattened.

The Melodic form of Polish Ballads
To conclude, melodic climax is said to be a significant characteristics of the melodic style of songs.
As far as the frequency of climaxes is concerned the preference for the 2nd, 5th, and 8th step of the scale results from the melodic course for the steps correspond with the centers of melodic verses.
The melodic line of verses is most often sinuous, less frequent are various types of arcs, whereas the least common are straight lines (shaped similarly to the scale).

 Steve Baughman - Melodic Expression
Melodic expression, or "non-linear" playing, is primarily an alternate tunings endeavor in which the player tries to avoid using the same melody string twice in a row, instead finding each subsequent melody note on a different string.
The term "melodic," used in this context, comes from the five-string banjo world and refers to the exciting discovery made in the early 1960's that bluegrass banjo players could depart from strict arpeggiated "Scruggs" style picking and actually play fiddle tunes note for note.
Melodic playing is as useful as it is underutilized in Celtic guitar.

Huron's Review of Z. Eitan's "Highpoints: A Study of Melodic Peaks"
Since music theorists have not posited a role for melodic low points comparable to the presumed role of high points, this choice of control pitches ought to highlight those differences that are due to musical goals rather than artifacts of the pitch distribution.
A better way of testing whether melodic peak points tend to be approached by larger or smaller intervals is by randomly rearranging the order of the notes in a melody and determining whether the antecedent and consequent intervals surrounding peak pitches are now larger or smaller.
The larger melodic intervals surrounding peak pitches seems to be little more than an artifact of the fact that peak pitches are simply further away from the majority of other pitches in the melody.

The Diatonic Harp Reference: Improvising Using Rhythm
The result is a sense of "variation on a theme" familiarity (where the theme is the melodic rhythm statement rather than (necessarily) a melodic (note-values plus pitches) one).
When a melodic rhythm note-value phrase has been established, it can later be improvised off of, again, rhythmically, where the pitch of the notes has less importance, over and over, with variations.
This attention to melodic rhythm patterns is also useful as a "rut-busting" exercise.

JAZCLASS - Jazz scales lesson : Melodic minor scale in all Keys
The key signature for the melodic minor scale is the same as its related major scale which has its its tonic note 3 semitones above.
For example the C melodic minor scale is related to the Eb major scale, and shares that scale's key signature (3 flats).
The melodic minor scale was (like the harmonic minor scale) originally derived from the natural minor scale, by raising its 6th and 7th note.

Ron Block commented one time that he listened to some old recordings of his when he was heavily into his melodic phase and thought it was the most terrible crap he had ever heard.
I'm trying to learn melodic style, and ultimately hope to develop my own sense of taste, but until then I'd like to learn more about what is considered tasteful to others.
What I refer to was when people would learn a melodic tune, usually a fiddle tune played on the banjo, then turn around and throw the same chromatic licks in just about every song they play.

ASA/EAA/DAGA '99 - Motor Theory of Melodic Expectancy
There are patterns of melodic motion (i.e., how a melody proceeds from note to note) that appear to transcend many musical styles.
We submit that the origin of the principles and by extension the common melodic patterns may be vocal constraint.
All three explanations for the influence of vocal constraints on melodic expectancies hinge on the assumption that vocal accuracy is consistent with melodic expectancy.

Sacramentum - Melodic "Heavy Metal Style" Death/Black Metal
To incorporate a distributed structure Sacramentum bend their melodies into visions of a changing beast through a language of high-speed, intensely melodic, violent and atonal riffs producing through their collective interpretation a vision of ephemeral affinity vanishing in the distintegration of tone, a worldscape of violent self-recreation.
Cleft phrases and neatly tucked melodic couplings sustain the interiors of songs carrying a weight of transitional phrasing and extensive solos which borrow from neoclassical traditions in a blues context.
While this work drops out of any specific genre to become the dreaded Swedish melodic metal, its essential values of extremity and beauty are still expressed, although in something closer to what most listeners can handle than the glorious excesses of emotion and technicality that were past albums.

 Melodic Minor Scale
Looking at the numbers, we can deduce that the melodic minor scale is a minor scale (not THE minor scale everyone talks about - that would be the aeolian mode, but a minor scale none-the-less).
So we could view the melodic minor scale as an aeolian scale with a major seventh (a major sixth in the place of a minor sixth, and a major seventh in place of a minor seventh). We also note that it is very similar to THE dorian mode/scale.
So we could view the melodic minor scale as an dorian scale with a major seventh (a major seventh in place of a minor seventh).

Melodic Minor Modes - Gordon Au   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-20)
In jazz, the melodic minor scale is simply a major scale with a minor third.
(Although in classical music the melodic minor scale changes when played up or down, it is always the same in jazz vernacular.) So it contains only one note of difference from the major scale - and hence all of the melodic minor modes are only one note different from their corresponding major modes.
Although the most common minor chord in jazz is the minor seventh (m7), the melodic minor chord (mâ—³7) also shows up quite often, almost always functioning as the tonic.

Unanimated - Melodic Swedish Death Metal
Much in the style of "North From Here" from Sentenced or "The Somberlain" from Dissection, this album is driven by unravelling melodies which sketch a harmonic relationship in which the fundamental directional reconfigurations of the song occur.
Instrumentation is proficient and varies in its mix between Iron Maiden meets death metal melodic riffing and jazz/progrock guitar stylings.
Majestic in its presentation of gently seeding terror which issues forth in snowballing momentum firebombs of riff phenomena culminating, this music projects its essential tonal issues well and cloaks them in conceptual exploration of nihilism, self-negation and desire for significance in moments of clarity.
