	Melodramatic Tactics: Theatricalized Dissent in England's Marketplace, 1800-1885
		Melodramatic Tactics demonstrates that stage melodrama, rather than epitomizing an embarrassing century in English drama's otherwise illustrious chronology, was one version of a "melodramatic mode" in nineteenth-century literature and society.
		The social content and influence of this melodramatic mode have been largely ignored because melodrama was overshadowed by the more prominent doctrines of Romanticism and, later in the century, High Realism.
		By contrast, the melodramatic mode resisted the classification of English society and Romantic poetry's interiorization of the subject by insisting on the continued vitality of traditionally public, social formations, especially status hierarchies, which constituted identity in terms of familial and communal relationships.

		There are many names for melodramatic films - 'women's pictures', 'weepies', tearjerkers, soap operas (or soapers), and more recently, 'chick flicks'.
		Melodramatic plots with heart-tugging, emotional plots (requiring multiple hankies) usually emphasize sensational situations or crises of human emotion, failed romance or friendship, strained familial situations, tragedy, illness, neuroses, or emotional and physical hardship within everyday life.
		The melodramatic format allows the character(s) to work through their difficulties or surmount the problems with resolute endurance, sacrificial acts, and steadfast bravery.

		Nowadays melodrama and melodramatic refer to anything that is 'overly' dramatic; but a better way to think about is probably in terms of addition to the basic form.
		Melodramatic almost always means that you are seeing a drama that is overly simplistic, with exaggerated situations and overwrought emotions.

		Williams refers to this melodramatic structuration as commodified "planned flow." By cutting down on exposition or establishing sequences that tend toward lengthy and deliberate characterizations, the purveyors of melodrama are able to break their tales into shortened, fast-paced, and often unconnected simple sequences that make the commercial breaks feel natural to viewers.
