Melody - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Melodies may also be described by their melodic motion or the pitches or the intervals between pitches (predominately conjuct or disjunct or with further restrictions), pitch range, tension and release, continuity and coherence, cadence, and shape (ibid, p.290-301).
Melody, he argues, is music 'at hand'; it is that dimension which the common musical competence extracts (often with little respect for the integrity of the source), appropriates and uses for a variety of purposes: singing, whistling, dancing, and so on." (Middleton, p.96)
While in both most popular music and classical music of the common practice period pitch and duration are of primary importance in melodies, the contemporary music of the 20th and 21st centuries pitch and duration have lessened in importance and quality has gained importance, often primary.

The melody of the runo song is repeated either by one or two verses, both consisting of 8 syllables.
As the melody of the runo song (consisting of 8 syllable-notes), is repeated either by one or two verses, the basic form of the corresponding melody, which is the statistical mean of all variants used in this song, is taken as the model.
The alteration in the length of the line of melody by at least one metric unit and the increase in the number of notes because of the syllable division with different pitches can also be included in the melody variations.

 Bach Choir of Bethlehem
A chorale is a hymn-like melody sung in German, the language Luther spoke.
In its traditional usage, a chorale would have a simple, obvious melodic line (sung by the sopranos in a choir or by the congregation in church) with a basic chordal accompaniment sung by the altos, tenors, and basses in a choir, or played on the organ.
This chorale-fantasia uses the same melody as in "The Lord hath all these wonders wrought." The melody, as you recall, was written by Martin Luther, and would have been easily recognized by Bach's Lutheran congregation.

 Lecture 1: Melody and Rhythm
So we can define a melody as "a coherent succession of pitches." What makes melodies interesting and memorable is a combination of things: the overall shape- what is sometimes called "line" or "melodic contour;" the rhythm; and the type of movement (i.e., leaping or stepwise).
Melodies can be balanced by the use of both melodic and rhythmic "parallelism" also.
The high point of the melody- the point of greatest excitement- is called the "climax," and the melody usually falls away or winds down from this climax.

Folk Song And Its Relation To Nationalism In Music
Specimens of the first type, chants such as these are to be heard in every part of the globe, the rhythmic figure being necessarily short and repeated incessantly.
Melody, therefore, may be classed as the gift of folk song to music; and harmony is its shadow language.
It was also stated that the relative antiquity or primitivity of a melody is invariably to be discovered by its degree of relationship to the original type, one note, one rhythm, the emotional, the savage howl, or, in other words, the high note followed by a gradual descent.

 chord-zithers
This illustrates the arbitrary nature with which single vs paired melody string configurations were assigned to this model; the decision that this instrument was to be single-strung was apparently made in mid-production.
The one accidental of the melody strings, a Bb in each of the two octaves, facilitates playing in the keys of C and F. It is thus supported by the chords.
As many pieces employ only notes of the diatonic scale in their melodies but require more than 4 chords to accompany, reducing the number of melody strings of chord-zithers with more than 4 chords for greater ease of playing the melodies is in my opinion an altogether acceptable undertaking.

What is melody   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-06)
Melody, like harmony and orchestration, varies in its quality with its period, and is almost as diverse as language: slang to the father is classic to the son, and a crude Americanism may have been a polite English expression on board the Golden Hind.
Similarly, melodies of the bel canto order have a very different origin from those of the Wagnerian dramatic quality: the first is something that acts and springs out of itself, whilst the second is chained to the harmony in which it has its being and of which it must remain an integral part.
The traditional vocal type of melody in orchestral works has been with us during the lives of most now living, but the path diverged.

The idea is, the player pushes the button for the desired melody string(s), and this lowers and thus engages the "plectrum".
Its gizmo (melody type) is a fixed row of spring hammers for playing its paired melody strings, and again was presumably meant to appeal to would-be mandolinists.
Its gizmo is of the melody type, and it takes the miniature diatonic "keyboard" approach to manipulating the spring hammers.

 GALERIA VIRTUAL: Topophonia Technical Details
This type of noise is, neither totally random as white noise which has a constant frequency spectrum, nor so correlated as noise with a spectral density of order 1/f².
What is very surprising, is the fact that this is true for any type of melody whatsoever, be it from the XI century or contemporary, and more surprising still, it is independent from its origin, be it from the African pigmies, from occidental classics or from the Beatles.
This means that if a noise with 1/f spectrum is generated and from it a melody is written, where the sequence of notes is given by the variation of the noise, the resulting sound would have the necessary characteristics to be recognised as a melody.

Some people think of melody as some big thing that soars on the voice of Whitney Houston or Michael Boulton, but that's just one type of melody.
Melody is hard to talk about because it's part mathematics and part spirit.
Another example is "She Believes In Me." Tension is created in both cases by the accented, held note of the hook falling on a non-chordal tone, (of course, the 4 replaces the 3 in the tonic chord when it's played, but it's not part of the tonic).

The performer played melody on the first string, i.e, first on player's left (psilí or kandí or kandini) and third string (vourgara), using the second string (mesakí) as a drone.
Dances like this, which combine the melodic range of a sixth, the drone, and a type of melody arranged in sequences of two-measures in 2/4, seem related to the musical language of the askomadoura (the Cretan bagpipe) (Magrini 1982: 69-73, 138-141).
This results in a different way of performing old dance melodies, the player now using the first and second strings (new lyra) for the melody instead of first and third (old lyra).
