The cockchafer should not be confused with the similar European Chafer (Rhizotrogus majalis), which has a completely different life cycle, nor with the June Beetles (Phyllophaga spp.), which are native to North America, nor with the Summer Chafer (or "European June Bug", Amphimallon solstitiale), which emerges in June and has a two-year life cycle.

De achterlijfspunt van de Melolontha melolontha is toegespitst en langer dan bij de kastanjemeikever (Melolontha hippocastani), die vooral in de duinstreek voorkomt en in ons land zeldzaam is. In Midden-Europa komt zo nu en dan de Melolontha pectoralis voor.

The most familiar of our chafers is the Cockchafer or 'Maybug' (Melolontha melolontha) - the adult beetle (shown above) is a night-flier and often comes crashing into lighted windows on warm evenings in early summer.

il est vrai comme le fait remarquer camille que hippocastani a le dessus plus clair et le pronotum souvent marron, ce qui est moins fréquemment le cas chez melolontha.
Il est tout à fait possible, sinon probable qu'il s'agisse de melolontha, mais pour ce que j'en vois, personnellement je ne l'affirmerais pas, mais peut-être suis-je trop prudent et trop consciencieux !
c''est du schématique pour melolontha et hippocastani, par contre c'est franchement n'importe quoi pour pectoralis qui a un pygidium en pointe un peu moins allongée que melolontha.

il s'agit selon toute vraisemblance de melolontha melolontha, pectoralis n'est pas signalé de belgique à ma connaissance, mais peut-être faudrait-il revoir la chose de près??
pour identifier les 3 espèces en question (melolontha, hippocastani et pectoralis) à partir de la forme du pygidium :http://www.hydro-kosmos.de/jahresz/fruehj/xmaikf.htm
je viens juste de voir le lien pour déterminer les 3 espèces de melolontha dont nous discutons d'après la forme du pygidium...
