The Melrose team had had a long rest and the two clubs they had played previously were both light and they were therefore much fresher than their opponents.
After ten minutes ply Melrose obtained a try and left the field without either trying to their goal or finishing the game, claiming the cup; but their title to do so was challenged by Gala on the ground that the game had not been finished.

The original plan was for a new company involving Scottish Enterprise Borders, EventScotland, SBC, Melrose RFC and the SRU to host the IRB Sevens at the Greenyards from 2007-2011.
For a whole host of reasons, I don't think Melrose is the best place for this event but, if it gets the award of the event against very good competition from abroad, I will support it wholeheartedly and the best of luck.
Melrose with only the small population as you pointed out earlier has quite a number.

Chalmers, who played his first game for Melrose back in 1986 against Harrogate, made his 200th appearance for the Greenyards outfit against Ayr on Saturday, after appeals to his Melrose club mates to let him bow out quietly fell on deaf ears.
Although his playing days are over, Melrose's most capped player still intends to be fully active elsewhere in Scottish rugby both at club and possibly higher level.
Melrose have a weekend off as far as XVs rugby goes this week but elsewhere in the Borders, there's plenty of action to be found.
