Meltdown is easily Ash's best album since 1977; this is the sound of a band becoming interesting again.
This album is a great return for Ash, who quite frankly should already be one of the biggest bands in the world if it depended on pure songwriting talent.
The sound is much darker and heavier than on previous guitar/pop albums such as 1977 and Free All Angels and is a significant change in direction for the band.

Ash - Meltdown   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-10)
However, when it was announced that Ash would be returning to the heavy overtones of their classic ‘1977’ album, I was very pleased and rather eager to hear the fruits of their latest labour.
The opening 4 tracks of ‘Meltdown’ pummel their way out of the speakers in a barrage of guitar riffs and thundering drums.
It doesn’t reach the heights of ‘1977’, an album against which all Ash releases will be judged, but overall this is an enjoyable listen.

Ash - Meltdown : album review
Meltdown has nothing to fear from the Trade Descriptions Act - the guitars explode with intent and Rick McMurray's drums propel things along like a heat-seeking missile.
The likes of Clones, Detonator and Vampire Love are among the heaviest things Ash have put their succinct little name to with beefed-up riffs (the influence of producer Nick Raskulinecz (System Of A Down) and mixer Rich Costey (Audioslave) is noticeable), stomping rhythms and even the odd guitar solo.
An album that has all the tunefulness of old in order to retain the fanbase, while rocking things up enough to appeal to a whole new audience (particularly, you feel in the good ole' US of A).

 PIXELSURGEON | Reviews | Music | Ash
The title of the new album alone makes it clear that Ash are going back to a purer, rockier sound for studio album number four.
Free All Angels wasn't just a really great album; it was also a really important album for Ash as a band, who had all reached their mid-twenties.
Indeed, Meltdown just might be their best work, in the sense that it seems to consolidate everything they've done well before, without lingering too long on the reflective moments they've been prone to at times.

 Ash: Meltdown (2005): Reviews
“Meltdown” is a sturdy, well-written and (perpetually adolescent lyrics aside) mature addition to Ash’s enduring and near-essential canon – ample reward for ten years’ loyal support.
Meltdown is easily Ash's best album since 1977; this is the sound of a band becoming interesting again.
Ultimately, Meltdown isn’t as dramatic a failure as its title seems to be begging me to pronounce it--in fact it isn’t really a failure at all.

Meltdown is equally as infectious as all Ash albums.
Opener "Meltdown" is a clear statement of intent, a riff that could force even a baby to headbang, yet a chorus so beautifully pop you'll sing it for days.
The last song on the album "Vampire Love" rounds things off with an intrigingly dark set of Tim Wheeler lyrics and a power chord or six to blow you away, and is neatly topped of with a solo Slash would have been proud of.

 Cokemachineglow.com - Ash: Meltdown
Ash are the quintessential summertime power pop band, and judging by the frequency with which they use the word “summer” in their songs, they seem fully aware of this.
Several of Meltdown’s other songs deliver in similar fashion, in particular the title track, “Evil Eye” and “Renegade Calvacade,” but “Orpheus” is by far the mixtape nugget.
As satisfying as many of Meltdown’s songs are, it doesn’t trump Free All Angels in the catchiness department, and like practically every other record they’ve released, takes a bit of a nose dive in its latter portions.

After only a few listens to their album I knew I wanted to hear what they had to say.
First we were signed by Karmageddon Media at the fall of 2004 and first studio sessions started at the beginning of 2005.
I don´t own many of albums made after 1995, I always listen the older ones from Norway, Sweden and Finland, newer ones just lack of that spirit there once were, that simple.

The album is noisy and messy and lacking real power, particularly in Wheeler's rather weak (and often flat) vocals.
But four albums down the line, and a greatest hits compilation behind them (they are still only in their twenties!), they finally release the album they have been working for all these years.
Ash have managed to create an album that is not only hard, fast and powerful but also incredibly musical and tuneful.

 Ash 'Meltdown'
There's a sense of determination, even fury, to 'Meltdown' which has been missing from Ash for so long we forgot what a crucial ingredient it was.
If it sounds formulaic that's because it is, but it's a damn good one and, to be honest, it wouldn't be an Ash album without at least one soaring hymn to doomed love.
It's a small criticism though - with 'Meltdown' Ash have not only returned to the form that made them so essential in the first place but have also shown the crucial signs that they can transcend it.

Lead single "Orpheus" sets the tone--while the verses rage with ‘70s metal-derived licks, the choruses burst with one of the sunniest and catchiest tunes that Tim Wheeler and company have ever committed to tape.
The real shame is that Kinetic Records went broke just before the album was to be released, again robbing the U.S. of a timely release.
But Meltdown's quality justifies a hefty import price tag: it's a surprisingly strong and assured record, the kind that--while not the highest point of the band's catalog--will help shore up their building legacy as one of the most consistent bands to emerge from the British Isles in the ‘90s.

ASH opt to crank things up a notch, with their fifth studio album, Meltdown, which, quite literally, sets out to blow the speakers in old-school, rock 'n' roll style.
There are times when the album becomes a little too heavy for its own good, as in the Metallica-laced Clones, and which leave it open to suggestions that they have sold out, but, for most of the rest of the time, this is an eyebrow raising affair, that screams quality (literally).
That track, in particular, is a highlight of the album, and one which looks tailor-made to become a huge future single.

An Associated Press reporter found more than 40 of the pictures among hundreds in an album posted on a commercial photo-sharing Web site by a woman who said her husband brought them from Iraq after his tour of duty.

Ash start the Album with Meltdown, which pretty much sums up the rest of the album, it's rock alright but just a little lighter, pop rock.
Meltdown is a sensational song, and if you want to compare it to something they kind of sound like Blink 182, except more British and a little maturer.
Clones changes the sound of the album to make it a bit darker which is good, and this is where some of the soaring guitar solos come in.
