With its terraced streets it is more reminiscent of the railway towns of the industrial north of England and the midlands, than a small village in deepest rural Norfolk.
In the mid-nineteenth century Melton Constable was a parish with 19 houses and a small population of around 100, mainly working for Lord Hastings at the Hall and on his estate.
As the railway was extended the village grew and at the turn of the century the population stood at around one thousand.

Melton Constable Hall, the seat of Lord Hastings, is a rectangular mansion of fine architectural proportions built of red brick and stone and completed in 1670, two wings and an entrance portico having been added in the 18th and 19th centuries.
In the ecclesiastical parish of Melton Constable Lord Hastings is lord of the manor and sole landowner.
Previous to 1885 this section of Melton Constable civil parish was very sparsely inhabited, and its present populous condition is due to the building of the railway in that year by the Eastern and Midland Company, whose property was later taken by the midland and Great Northern Joint Committee.

Melton Constable was granted by the Norman Conqueror to William de Beaufo, Bishop of Thetford, and was held by Roger de Lyons as a lay fee.
In 1235, Editha, daughter of Peter de Constable, and sister and heiress to Geoffrey de Constable, married Sir Thomas de Estley, and the association of the Astley family - with both Melton Constable and Burgh Parva, which exists to this day, began.
Later that year, a new ‘town’ was created in an area of empty land on the borders of the parishes of Melton Constable and Briston, and in the following year, the Lynn and Fakenham Railway was extended eastwards to the new town.

MELTON CONSTABLE-WITH-BURGH-PARVA forms a fertile parish in Walsingham union, Holt county court district, and petty sessional division, Hindringham polling district of North Norfolk, Norwich bankruptcy district, Holt hundred, Holt rural deanery, and Norwich archdeaconry.
Melton Constable has a station on the Eastern Midlands Railway, and since the establishment of the 'plant' or railway works, covering an area of 14 acres, the parish has greatly improved.
About 800 acres of Melton Constable are in the park and woods which encompass the handsome mansion of Lord Hastings, the owner of the parish and lord of the manor, which has been held by his family for many centuries.

Melton was a major railway junction on the former MandGN (Midland and Great Northern Joint Railway), with lines to Kings Lynn (South Lynn, and the Midlands), Cromer (Breach), Norwich (City) and Yarmouth (Beach).
Melton, however, remained open until 1964 when the Cromer branch was cut back to Sheringham.
If you drive through Melton today you would be forgiven for thinking if there was actually a railway there at all, let alone a once busy railway junction.

William Marriott and his design staff at Melton Constable are well known to admirers of the Midland and Great Northern Joint Railways Committee for a variety of reasons, but perhaps the premier one should be the part they played in the use and development of reinforced concrete in this country.
He was at first entirely alone in his drawing office at Melton Constable, but soon gathered a staff of assistants and pupils around him.
The late Bob Loynes was a draughtsman in the Melton drawing office at the time and had nothing but praise for the workmanship of the staff involved.

Melton Constable was once the hub of the 180 mile Midland and Great Northern Joint Railway and had more in common with Crewe or Doncaster than rural Norfolk.
The bridge where the GER Norwich to Wells line crossed the MGNJR Melton Constable to Kings Lynn line is still in situ, complete with deck, as the GER line remained open for freight until 1981.
The bridge where the GER Dereham to Kings Lynn line passed under the MGNJR Melton Constable to Kings Lynn line is still evident - deck removed - with track in situ on the surviving section of the GER route (see Middleton Towers).
