 AW2004 Abstract: Nixon
This area was occupied by the SE margin of the local ice cap and during deglaciation, a marine corridor extended from southwest Hecla and Griper Bay to Liddon Gulf, splitting the island in two.
Plans for 2004 fieldwork on western Melville Island include surveying and dating marine limits and postglacial shorelines throughout fiords flanking the western margin of the former local ice cap where both glacigenic and raised marine sediments have been cited.
The dynamics of the Melville Island ice cap will also contribute to a better understanding of the late glacial climate at high latitudes, and what role the ice played in the depositional record of the adjacent Arctic Ocean and its relationship to the NE extremity of Beringia.

14/3/2005 -- Climate: A grizzly evidence of warming?
Melville is at about 75 degrees north latitude and 115 degrees longitude, roughly 1,000 miles (1,600 kilometers) due north of Yellowknife in Canada's Northwest Territories.
DNA analysis of the hair confirmed the animal was a grizzly bear, probably related to the mainland grizzly population near Paulatuk at Amundsen Bay far to the south, according to Jonathan Doup, a postdoctoral fellow at UA's earth and atmospheric sciences department and a member of the research team.
One effect on the anecdotal side is that the research geologists on Melville Island may have to change their game plan.

ABC News: Grizzlies Encroaching on Polar Bear Country
The recent spotting of a grizzly bear in Canada's extreme north means that the bear could be pushing in on polar bear territory.
The latest evidence that grizzlies are heading north comes from the University of Alberta in Canada and a team of scientists who weren't even looking for bears when they made a startling discovery.
Not far from the cabin, which is maintained by the Canadian government for researchers to seek shelter from all sorts of things, including polar bears, the scientists noticed some footprints in the spongy ground.

Leverington Abstract   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-21)
The current operation of Canada’s Radarsat platform (launched in 1995), and the future operation of the Japanese ASTER sensor on board the U.S. EOS AM-1 platform (to be launched in the summer of 1999) together offer earth scientists an unprecedented opportunity to develop advanced geological remote sensing techniques for arctic and arid environments.
Perhaps the greatest potential advancement provided by these remote-sensing instruments is an increased capability to discriminate between surface lithologies.
This project involves a comprehensive evaluation of the utility of Landsat TM, ASTER, and Radarsat satellite imagery in the discrimination of surface lithology at two study sites in northern Canada (Melville Island, Nunavut, and the Cape Smith Fold Belt region of northern Québec).
